McLaren boss Ron Dennis has defended his team's integrity in the wake of the spying controversy that erupted earlier this week.

Dennis became visibly emotional when speaking about the saga at Silverstone today, and brought a press conference to an early halt.

"Personal integrity is important to me, and my company's integrity is more important," he said.

"This matter does not involve our company.

"I am absolutely confident with the passing of time that you will see how McLaren's position is one that is reflective of our statements.

"The team has never to my knowledge used other people's intellectual property.

"It is not on our car.

"I am sure the FIA will confirm that, either now or in the future.

    "That is the key message.

"We are co-operating with the FIA and with Ferrari and I have complete confidence in the outcome.

"I live and breathe this team, and there is no way anything incorrect would ever happen in this team."

McLaren announced on Tuesday that it had suspended a senior engineer, believed to be chief designer Mike Coughlan, after confidential documents belonging to Ferrari were discovered at his house.

Ferrari then confirmed that the incident was linked to its own investigation into the actions of its former engineer Nigel Stepney, who is the subject of a criminal inquiry in Italy.

A day later, having completed an internal inquiry, McLaren said it was certain that the information in the documents had not been shared with any other team member or used to benefit the squad in anyway.

The FIA has also begun an investigation into the issue, with the full co-operation of both teams.

I agree but only half way. Ferrari is just as guilty. It was thier man that sold the info. They should have a tighter reign on such things. Unless it can be proven that Ron Dennis himself knew what thier designer was doing, and was involved it would not be fair to just penalise McLaren.

Incredible. Because you don't hire a watchman to guard your house, you are just as guilty as the burglar. Perposterous.

If the burglar worked for you then maybe you should think about better screening processes for your employees.

Nope this whole thing falls into Stepney's lap. He is rightfully doomed.

In the end he has shown himself to be lacking in character, and looks like he did this to piss of his employer ... and got caught.

There would be no issue if he had acted with class. Buck stops with him.

No matter how careful and how much screening you do, the people you trust the most can turn around and bite you.

with huge amounts of security, governments have employees steal and sell documents far too many times. If you think your systems are foolproof...then you are the fool.

No matter how careful you are, no matter how good your screening, sometimes the people you trust the most can turn on you.

Governments spend massive amounts on security yet classified documents are sold to the enemy. Anyone who thinks their security system is foolproof...is a fool.

sorry. didn't mean to post twice. sometimes you can't even trust yourself. :D

Lol. I was actually pulling your chain if you didn't notice, I know it's not Ferrari's fault, for once. I'm actually curious to know what would drive a man that has been with the team for so long to do such a thing, if this is even true.

supposedly he got passed up for a promotion.

I like the part where he stopped being lollipop man after Schumi ran over him. Guess Nigel got tired of being a sucker. :D

Don't know, this still feels too hard to believe that Stepney would do something this bad. Regardless of promotion or getting run over.

In a nutshell today's Gazzetta Dello Sport had an interesting article and it comes down to this-although the cars are very different, everything from Ferrari's electronics to their suspension geometry, fuel tank capacity, weight distribution, etc is allegedly in the documents. More importantly, McLaren has a huge advantage in the event they decide to develop a long wheelbase car; don't forget teams are already looking to develop the '08 cars.

I think FIA have already made their decision (per the "Sporting Code") and Bernie himself has said it-drivers won't lose points but McLaren will. I think we'll see some sort of WCC penalty AFTER the British GP.

The criminal process will continue of course, but swift-and fair-action by the FIA will hopefully put this sad affair on the backburner-and take it off the front pages.....

The latest from the "Gazzetta dello Sport":
a second search of Stepney's house was conducted today and there is the possibility of a second McLaren person involved.
