I have some 16" Momo R3 Multi Piece Rims on my 82' 308 and one of them has a leak in the inside seal. I have taken in it to several places in town, Wheel Wizard, Gran Turismo etc... and nobody wants to mess with it.

I do not want to buy all new rims (I really like these ones) and am sick of adding air every time I want to drive the car.

I am open to suggestions on how to fix this rim. I remember another post that said they can be fixed by taking it apart and resealing it with silicone but since I have not done this before I am not sure how to do this. Obviously I am willing to help in any way, drive it to someone's house/shop and get this thing fixed once and for all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

    Andy,

I would say that simply removing the tire and re-sealing the center silicone bead should be an easy job. I do not see why you would even need to separate the wheel halves. Once the new silicone is applied and cured. A center wrap could be applied over the silicone.

    Good Luck,

    Joe

First off, are they two piece or three piece?

Second, are you sure it is leaking around the joint between the inner and outer rim section and the hub flange?

If yes and the unit is a bolt together wheel you can unbolt everything and see what is going on. possibly the o-ring (if there is one) has gone bad.

If you just want to do a quick repair, it is okay to reseal the existing rtv seal around the joint. Just clean up the rtv and the surrounding area with Acetone and apply new rtv on top of the old. You should be okay.

But i would R&R the wheel myself. Just mark each rim half and the center section so that the parts all go back together clocked the same way they came apart. Not 100% required, but makes for easier balancing. Unbolt and split the wheel, replace the o-rings, if necessary and then re-rtv it when bolting it back together. Make sure you nip up the bolts like wheel lugs-going around in an opposite fashion to each nut-don't torque them up all at once, but build the torque up in 2/3 tries. This will insure the parts seat properly to each other.

It really is pretty easy to do.

I am not sure if they are 2 piece or 3 piece. It is leaking all around those little bolts (there are 30 of them) you see in the picture. I may just take the tire off, remove the bolts and see what we have going on in there.

    Andy,
Give Craig a call at Butler tire in Alpharetta (678-893-0502). He does my wheel work and they sell and work on a load of 2 and 3 piece wheels. He might be able to help.

Butler told me that they can't fix it and have no idea who can.

    Andy,

Just pull the thing apart and silicone everything up and you should be okay. The wheel is a wheel-it ain't no neuro surgery.

Just get the wheel rebalanced after you are done.

If you want some one else to do it call up Kinetic Motorsports in Flowery Branch. They are good people and run a number of race cars in Grand Am and ALMS so they are use to 3 piece wheels and leaks!

Just an udpate. I pulled everything apart and found the seal (silicone) inside had come loose. I cleaned everything up and resealed it. As soon as it cures I will put the tire on and see what happens.

Good! Just do a proper job torquing up the rims bolts and you will be fine.

Further update, the tire has been put back on the rim and this morning it seemed to be holding pressure. No more adding air every time I want to use the car.

Brian - thanks, you were right. It was not brain surgery and now that I know how to do it I feel better.

Bob- Thanks for the help on this little project, I appreciate it.
