I am looking to get my first Ferrari, after owing many porsches. I want a 355 but I am also considering a 348.

If the two were equal miles 10k+/-, and had recent full service (belts etc.), which would be the most reliable and the least cost to maintain long term? I would put 3-5k miles per year on the car, but I also might want to take it on a road trip 500mi.

I know about the 355 issues and cost to maintain but what about the 348?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Cary

Sounds to me that your head is leading you to a 348 but your heart is set on a 355.

    It's a tough decision. I know....I know...

The 348 will be cheaper to maintain than a 355.

Well there is certainly no shortage of nay sayers ;). My F355 has 37k on the clock. My valve guides were replaced at 29k. My car screams and the more I drive it the more I like it :D. My advice (which could be disputed) is to verify the current condition of the car and engine. Unfortunately there are dishonest individuals who disconnect the odometer because there are buyers out there who will pay a nice premium on 'low miles'. To me low miles means nothing if the condition of the car does not reflect it. I say current condition, but that is just me ;).

BTW I had a 993TT too! see pic below :D:

Well here is thier sinister sibling

very good, sir....understand the value of a PPI w/leakdown and compression..funny thing is, most low milage ones I've looked at haven't had any valve guide work done....seems like when you do a engine-out svc. you would go ahead? anyway, more to come....thanks !!

You are right... most don't have guide failure. I don't know the exact percentage of 355s that had the guides fail. Alot of people don't put very many miles on them, so guide failure may not show up until later. A complete guide/valve job is aproximately $4k (+/- $1k ;) ) after the engine is out during a major service. If the guides are not bad, it will help resale if they are done. It is my understanding the latter half of 1998 and all of 1999 had the valve guide issue addressed by the factory. Good luck and feel free to ask any and all questions. :)!!
