    We often discuss the relative importance of F1 based on its TV viewership. Well, I came across this top ten list, which I think gives a bit of factual perspective to it all:

    1. World Cup Final (Soccer) 256 mio
    2. Super Bowl 98 mio
    3. Winter Olympics 87 mio
    4. Euro Cup Final (Soccer) 86 mio
    5. Brazilian GP 83 mio
    6. Daytona 500 20 mio
    7. World Series Game 5 19 mio
    8. US Golf Masters 17 mio
    9. Wimbledon Final 17 mio
    10. NBA Basketball Final 17 mio

    Interesting, isn't it? Also gives you a bit of an idea on where the rest of motorsports lives...

    Interesting - Thanks for posting.

    However, the Winter Olympics is a two week "festival", not a single event, so that can be taken off the list IMHO.

    The world cup is only once every 4 years, so the choice of year skews the results - That can go away.

    So, a *single* F1 event comes in on the podium. Add a second (let alone 15-16) race and F1 looks pretty popular......

    The superbowl does surprise me however - Do you know the split between US and rest-of-world on that number?

    Don't have any more detail on the super bowl.

    You're right, the year definitely skews the results. The Brazilian GP was so popular because it was the title clincher, MS' last race, in a good time slot for the Americas and in prime time for Europe TV viewing plus it had no competition. Regular GPs have much less of an audience, but the combined viewership for the season makes it again a prime event in any year.

    These numbers btw are the viewers who watched the whole event, casual viewership numbers are a lot higher.

    I'd be really interested to see positions 10 thru 25. I bet there are at least 3 more GPs in there. Monza? Suzuka? These are the types of stats that corporations with global integration strategies salivate over.

    Surely there isnt that much difference between Brazilian GP and the other in the calendar ??

    Where are the other races ?

    And to think, there could be a lot more than one person watching per TV. For example, we had a least 15-20 people at the little Brazilian GP watching party we had here in Nashville.

    What makes this imprtant as an advertiser is that people root for;
    Ferrari,
    BMW,
    Toyota,
    Honda,
    Red Bull,
    Etc.
    ( Products )


    Not;
    Dallas,
    Manchester,
    Brasil,
    or other Locations.
