I have the car for 5 years and I am not really a collector, but it seems that the sum of the parts in this case is significantly more than the whole. The car starts everytime, runs great, everything works, interior is very good, no rust and the body is in great shape. I did new calibers, and a service 12 months ago. In looking at the prices for these cars the average is around $23k, yet I see engines going for 10K, a nose for 4.5K a rear clip for $4.5k, doors for $2.5K and that equals $24K, the rest of the car, suspension, interior, glass, dash, transmission, wheels, new tires, should come to >$5k, thats a total of around $30k. so if anyone has needs I'll collect names and when i get close to the numbers i will as they say pull the plug.

It's true these cars part out for more than they're worth, but it's a lot of time and effort to find buyers for ALL the parts. Generally it's not worth doing if there's nothing basically wrong with the car.

Never heard of parting out a good car, only salvage/smashed/beat up cars. Does your car fit one of these categories?

Well, TR has been taking in drivers in simular condition for over two decades, some driven in from clear across country, and litterally sawing them in half. As sad as it is to think people would destroy perfectly good cars, I guess if they arent worth anything much, go ahead. I can always use parts, and one more car out of circulation will just push the prices of the rest up higher in the end.

If the car's in as good shape as it sounds, put it up for sale as is before you do anything drastic.

Of course, since I'm looking for a 308, my opinion is probably somewhat biased ;)

What will really happen is that you'll sell a few parts over the course of a year, end up with a very large paperweight in your garage, and then you'll have to figure out how to get rid of it.

Better to take the easy sale and be done with it.

I could use some upper engine parts. Cams, cam covers, air box, belt covers, dizzys, etc. Let me know. Thanks.

    And the vultures are out....

I agree that if the car is in good shape it would seem a waste to part it out just to make a few more bucks. You also have to look at how much your time is worth. It will take a lot of time to properly dismantle, package, and ship all the parts.

That being said, if you do part it out I'd be interested in the little cowling under the steering column, the lower A/C vent housing, and the two little corner vent dash diffusers.

In almost all cases, the sum of the parts is greater than the whole. But keep in mind the cost of your own time to pull (and store) those parts, and the disposal of the shell when done (if you don't sell it.) In the end, it could be more trouble than its worth.

If the car is in such good condition as you describe, I would price it at $30K (since that's what you're looking for in terms of total parts revenue) and wait for the right buyer to come along. A 1979 308 GTS is desireable for the Weber carbureted setup. If my former high-mileage (107K miles) 1982 GTSi (least desireable engine) can sell for mid-$20K, you should be able to get the $30K you're looking for. I say you should keep the car intact and sell it to the right individual.

enzo has turned in his grave a whole lot...particularly when one works on his cars ( Iam sure he has been called a few choice names)...the cars were designed beautifully but built in a similiar fashion to a chinese plastic toy..once built and glued together it works great, until it stops, then try to fix it or buy parts for it ....
I will post some pics of the car in question...I have made no decision, and I am concerned if I have the skill to dismantle the car correctly. I guess it would depend on the $ ( sorry, thats what its all about) if someone offered to the big pieces i would hand them the car and title.

I agree with Tillman, you'll sell just enough to make the rest useless as a car and it'll be a big pain to get rid of. I don't think the dollar spread between car and parts is enough to justify all the work and agravation.

My girlfriends neighbor is always parting out cars, what a mess. I have better use for my time.

Nope, it's a veiled ad for either the car or the parts. I have no problems with you parting it out (when you sell the motor, tranny, wheels and interior out of it, I'll put in a low bid for the shell) -- but rules are rules. It's only fair to give Rob his cut for using his board.

This looks like the age old "please save the Ferrari" argument. If you love these cars and want to see them preserved then step up and buy the thing. The owner has the right to do what ever he wants. Kinda reminds me of a vintage Ferrari parts guy that many love to bash. He has actually done way more to promote the hobby than most of us here combined.

it didnt fall into my hands, i bought it they are cheap in comparison to high performance sport cars, actually i owned a 308gtsi about 20 years ago and thought it would be fun and enjoyable to drive again. In comparison to my porsche or sl500 the car is a slug. I would rather drive my cars than spend hours with the mundane subject like starters, fuse boxes, a/c issues, timing belts, etc.. some of you guys need to get a life, its just a car that will eventually either be sold, crashed or dismantled...and those guys that intend to keep the car forever, your wife will sell it as soon you are gone. to those of you that felt i am using this forum to sell the car as a way of circumventing some sort of fee...please accept my apologies that was not my intent. when iam ready to act i have no problem in spending $ to advertise. to the person that critecised me for not having completed my profile...i try to avoid situations that provide to much information on the internet, and do you really think anyone cares what your dream cars are.

then try to fix it or buy parts for it ....

Have you gone here (http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=157187) for parts?

This is my first Ferrari (79 GTB). When buying it, the first question was could i wrench on it? Second, could I find parts. So far, so good. $100 radiator thermoswitch cost $15. Waterpump cost a days wrench and $450 for the part. Looks like the pump's bearings and seals will come in under $100 when rebuilding the old one. Rebuilding certainly not brain surgery.

So far the big draw back to home repair is lifting the car. But, one non Ferrari garage gets hot when the Ferrari comes in so much so they'll lift it so i can fix just so they can get a look. Where there's a will, there's a way.

After all that, what a ride. Take the airbox off. Put screens on. Listen to eight venturis sucking air at 4-6K rpm. Yes! Give me a two lane winding road demanding 2nd 3rd gear revs to hear exhaust roar, cam whine and air going supersonic down webbers. What a ride. Don't chop it; drive it!

Remember, someone buys a new Mustang and driving it out the door at zero miles they lost $10K. And, the 'stang will never ever be he ride that the pre commputer Ferrari is. Wrench it. Drive it. Enjoy it.

Sorry you find them so lacking, compared to your OTHER fine machines.....;)

    See ya around the 'net......

You are correct the '79s were well past the prime of the 308 Market, maybe a little research would have added that to your vast base of knowledge......chop away, brudda!

    I need a blue/white clock........:D :D :D
