I couldn't really find a section on ferrarichat for this, but I wanted to share it with you guys nonetheless - so I figured I would just post it in the section I hang out in the most (360).

Okay, this is the most bizarre optical illusion I have ever come across. We turned it into a page on our website for our traders, in order to underscore how the human mind can play tricks on you (which can indirectly affect your trading). Anyway, that's not really the point. Check this out.. it's one of the strangest things I've ever seen and just had to share.

I've been looking at it all night and it still blows my mind. I thought something was going on (like a trick), until I took the image and moved it into a paint program, then cut the squares out and overlapped them. They are in fact all the same color. It's crazy.

Fascinating! If you blur your eyes a bit it helps to see them as the same colours.

Other Off Topic would probably be a good place for this.

I agree! Another way to prove to yourself it's true is to print it out and then fold the paper so that square B is next to an A square.

Very interesting - worked with stuff like this years ago. Many other examples that prove seeing is sometimes not believing. Incidentally, this is exactly the right place for illusions,i.e. who here cares about speed, cost, competitors, in their persuit of the prancing horse?oretc. Best

Just looked at the page - Dr. Edwin Land (of the Polaroid Land camera) has a similar thing, I'll have to try and find it. It is a collage of different colored squares. At first, a piece of paper with a small square hole in the center is placed over the image so that you can only see the center square. It looks orange or something. But when you remove the cover, the square is a completely different color! Not just a different shade of gray, but the color changes completely, like from orange to purple or something spectacular.

Equally "off topic" for those that don't believe this, search for a little program called Pixie from Nattyware. It's free and basically gives the color code for the pixel under your mouse pointer on th screen. Sure enough both square groups A and B are the same - #6A6A6A.

The last effect is a different effect than the one Ray & Mike are talking about. The color change is caused by the way we see. We see in what is called color constancy. In other words we determine the color in context. This means that our perception of color is never absolute.

Yes, it is a good example of how the mind plays tricks on you.

Fascinating. Kind of like the tricks the brokers play except they're holding all the cards and can see you coming ;)
