I don't believe in karma but I act as though I did. It's like manure: spread it around. And also, Happy Bastille Day! Allons Enfants de la Patrie...
karma...a concept many in the west have a hard time with because most of us were raised in the Judeo/Christian belief that each person has only one earthly lifetime, and this is reinforced with a strong materialistic ethic: you should go for the gusto, as they used to say in those beer ads, because this is your one time around. Common references to karma: "What goes around comes around." "We reap what we sow." Actually from the Bible. "The love you take is equal to the love you make." Scriptural references: "For the soul, there is neither birth nor death"...Bhagavad-gita, a pre-New Testament era Hindu scripture. "For one who has taken birth, death is certain; and for one who is dead, birth is certain"...Bhagavad-gita.
You have made my day. jsa330 - Eastern philosophies are a bunch of gunk. They have elephant gods for godsake! XD
Ricky: Regarding eastern philosophies...elephant gods or no, they're still an essential component of the body and history of philosophical and religious thought. Agarwal...Indian descent?
I'm not trying to insult anyone but a lot of people would say Karma and religion have the same beginnings. A way of telling people what to do and how to do it. It is instilled in them from a very young age and the weak just choose not to grow out of it so quoting passages from a bible would be meaningless. Just a point of view I've seen.
I was kidding around about it, but I think I forgot to bold what the point I was trying to make. Western 'religion' is religion. It's a strict set of constructs and rules to follow to reach some point. Eastern 'philosophy' is simply a way of life. A suggestion. From what I've learned there are no 10 commandments in Janism, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. As far as the many (faces or actual) gods go, it's mostly interpretive stories. I find them hilarious and almost a way to pass time. I grew up watching my grandfather watch tapes of the mythological stories (Ramayan and Mahbharata) 24/7. It was like a fantastic epic to me. 62 250 GTO : The word karma itself is bull****. It's the idea behind it which matters. As I said before it's simple science. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction.
That's a little BS too. "For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction" is straight out of a science text book. Karma and well wishing have nothing to do with science. Being nice generally means people will be nice to you. Being mean generally means people won't be as nice to you. The universe doesn't solve problems and really doesn't care because it can't care. Look out for yourself on this world because there's no guarantee being nice will keep you safe or happy.
I answered yes My belief is that there is Karma like: "what goes around comes around" + "you reap what you sow" etc IMO it is part of the universal law of attraction.. Do whatever resonates with you
Well the great thing about science is that it's open to be disputed as long as you can prove it incorrect. I can't prove to you that Newtons theories (or, in this case ironically enough are laws) are correct, but you are welcome to try to prove them *incorrect*. What you've said (the being nice part) helps support the theory of equal and opposite reactions. You will generate good karma and hopefully you will generate enough good karma to reach moshka, or nirvana. However, there must be balance in the world. That for me is explained through hell on earth. Why else do we have disagreements from the most basic democrats vs republicans to the more grand such as slaughtering of millions of people during Stalin's reign. Karma, or the concept of it extends beyond a lot more than just the individual. It's infinite. We are incredibly small influences on this perception we call life. It is never beginning nor never ending. It's so difficult to comprehend, that we've even egotistically named some arbitrary point of time the 'big bang' and some scholars even state that there may be a 'big crunch'. I think I remember why I'm doing applied sciences (engineering) rather than physics now... This sounds like a good time to tell you guys what a friend of mine and I discussed many months ago. We call it the Time Force Law (discovered by Ricky Agrawal and Andrew Martinez ) We strongly believe that once time travel has been discovered, any attempt to alter history (we can't travel forward in time, only back, for various reasons I'm too lazy to describe right now) will be thwarted by this 'time force'. Do not think of it as a physical force such as gravity, but as 'god' making sure what has happened, happened. We have many (haha, infinite) variations of the universe (we are living in one of them). The thing is, if the past changes, then obviously the outcome of our specific universe changes. That can't happen. Let's take an example. Let's say I go back in time with a sniper rifle and get ready to take a shot at Hitler. That's considered a significant event. Significant events cannot be changed. So an insignificant event will happen to prevent the significant event from changing. Once I fire the bullet or something, perhaps a bird will come down from the sky and intercept the bullet somehow. It sounds stupid, but it makes a lot of sense when you think about it. The only problem I've found is that it's hard to distinguish a significant event and an insignificant event. For example, what if a hunter was aiming for that bird a few minutes before. Thanks to the magic of the universe, our feeble minds don't have to comprehend this. Thank god.....
Why people feel the need to give it a different name....like "karma", I don't know, but I believe the principols have been around for a long time. It's called "reaping what you sow", but some want to call it karma?? If you tell a lie, people will not trust you. If you invest your money wisely, you will have more of it. If you hang around with loosers, people will think you're a looser.... ....you get the point.
They have to find out that you're lying. Smart people invest wisely and lose everyday. What defines a looser?
You painted a black and whit picture, the world is not black and white. How many people do you know about that get away with stealing millions of dollars, commit other crimes etc? A lot of people get away with more than their fair share.
At one point I thought i did, always trying to do the right thing for my fellow man but lately I keep getting screwed.
do you believe the earth is flat? WHat kind of a question is this? Karma, whether one 'believes' it or not, always existed, exists, and will always exist. That and the human experience of it are mutually exclusive... quick analogy is Newton's law of gravity...it existed long before Newton ever discovered it, and it still exists today, long after he is gone. If Newton didn't discover the law of gravity it doesn't mean it doesn't exist. LOL. some people...
