I've noticed in seeing alot of car ads and forum pics that plates are either plainly visible or are blacked out. Out of curiousity, what can someone (outside of law enforcement or gov.) possible do with knowing your plate?

There are some websites that allow you to look up someone's address with their plate number.

You need to check off a box stating that you are law enforcement or have permission or something, but if someone is looking it up for illegal purposes, they probably dont care about breaking the terms of service of the site.

Well that's easy: Give DMV your post office box as an address, not where you garage it.

I live in cognito, midway between communicato and conspicuous. ;)

It drives the local tax people nuts, too. :p

Yes for Texas. My mother used to own an insurance agency. She would know the name and address before the new client would step into her office just off the plate. But here in California this is not public information. JJ

Of course, you can't blank it out when you're driving down the road, so I really don't see much point in doing it to a picture...

With your plate I can get your social insurance number and everything under it. If I can, then so can others.

What's the difference between seeing it on the road or in a parking lot - and seeing it online?

How many people are close enough to you while driving to see the whole plate? Not many at all

How many people can see a picture online?
    Everyone on the planet.

Now I'm sure no one cares unless they plan to steal or damage the car but I would block it out on an expensive car. Why leave another chanell of opportunity open?

What is funny though is how cash money has been tainted in image - when you deposit cash at the bank in sums of more than a few hundred, it's like you must be a criminal or something to get your hands on cash.

In most states, these days, you can request that the DMV use something other than your SSN for your ID. Many automatically use something else --- especially states with a large non-citizen population.

I don't get the info through the DMV. The plate tells me who you are and where you live, from there I get your work info, bank info and eventually your social insurance number. It's strikingly easy.

Except the plate info won't give you where I live ... only the post box address I gave the DMV.

For the rest, .... well, if you can hack into the IRS, ...

If someone wants you bad enough, they'll bypass the plate stonewall if they can't get around it.

I really don't know of a way to have a full, active life and not have all of your information spread out across the country.
