We often speculate based on pre season testing results and then throw it all away again because we don't know under what conditions those times were achieved and whether it all just was a fishing expeditions to attract sponsors.

Well, I found an article published before the Melbourne GP where they gave WDC style points to the teams for achieving fastest laptimes in pre season testing sessions. They only did that for tests where more than 8 cars were present.

    Winter testing results:
    1 McLaren 143
    2 Ferrari 115
    3 BMW 80
    4 Renault 71
    5 Williams 37
    6 Toyota 35
    7 Honda 32
    8 Red Bull 11
    9 Toro Rosso 0
    10 Spyker 0
    11 Super Aguri 0

    Real standings before Germany:
    1 McLaren 128
    2 Ferrari 103
    3 BMW 56
    4 Renault 31
    5 Williams 13
    6 Toyota 9
    7 Red Bull 6
    8 Super Aguri 4
    9 Honda 1
    10 Toro Rosso 0
    11 Spyker 0

If you discount the Honda/Super Aguri desaster, they got it pretty much spot on.

    Pretty interesting, isn't it?

i really expected Honda to challenge for 3rd place at least. they were pretty solid in pre season tests.

That is interesting and thanks for digging that info up. Although we always have that disclaimer about "testing", we also know testing is to find the limits of the car and driver under certain conditions so setting fastest laps is definitely a positive indication.

Hmmm - Not according to Andreas' "winter world championship" results - 7th versus an actual 9th is a long way from 3rd.

Which makes the post even more interesting - Thanks for posting.

Incidentally, I wonder if the Winter Worlds have been analyzed this way previously? - It'd be really interesting to compare these with the corresponding "real" results of the season..... The above seems to suggest that winter testing is actually more indicative than "first thought", but it could be a statistical blip of course.

    Cheers,
    Ian

I'll see whether they did that back in 06 as well. The magazine is only a few years old.

BTW: They did (correctly) predict that Honda would suck big time this year. They didn't foresee the Super Aguri rise, but now they suggest that Honda should indeed swap back to their 06 chassis.

PS: I'll use the "credit" than against all the nonsense I've posted on here...:)
