Hey guys I am an Electrical Engineer and I designed a digital dash kit for another car in the past. I was wondering if there would be any serious interest in one for the 348/355?

The digital dash would include ofcourse digital readouts for all the existing gauges with an addition of bargraphs for the speedo and Tach. The color of the displays would be mainly red with maybe some green in the bottom end of the bargraphs. It would be microprocessor controlled, It would have warning lights for each gauge, and it would dim at night. It may also have the ability to give you a 0 to 60 time, a settable rev limit light, and anything else I/you can think of. It may also have the ability to add an additional gauge of your choice like: boost, Vacuum, trany temp, air temp, or ???. They would be designed to be as plug and play as possible without cutting anything up. They would also be accurate and reliable as my existing kit has been for the past 8 years.

This project would take quite a bit of work and time, but if there is enough interest in it I would do it. As I just bought my first Ferrari (a 91 348TS that I always wanted), I now have a test bed for the digital dash design to work out any bugs.

I have attached a picture to show you what the other digital gauge kit I designed looks like, so you can get an idea of the look. The price would be around $1000.00

Let me know if you would be seriously interested.
    Thanks,
    Tom

I like the analog component of the RPM gauge in the pic. You would have to do something about the apearance of the other gauges in the center of the dash.............................. For the same price ;). :D

If it was very plug and play and reversible I would be interested.

There you go, that'd be nice to have!

It looks kinda cool but personally I'd never replace the 355 dash with this...

That's quite doable for the Motronic 2.7 ecus. The red ecu code button unplugs from the ecu harness, so you could plug in a new circuit board interface there to trigger the interrupt for the codes (which is just a serial output signal).

    -------------

Also, if you are printing up new circuit boards for 348's, you'll find *substantial* interest in 348 fuse box pcb's.

Likewise, the 348 A/C-heat/Fan/Clock digital display and control system needs an aftermarket replacement. Frankly, that's the easiest of the above things to do, and potentially the most lucrative.

If I new What the coding was for the serial output I might be able to do something with it. I Don't think Ferrari will give that info out though. Does anybody have some info on it?

The serial output drives the CEL in the dash with multi-second on pulses and multi-second pauses (i.e. light off). Count the number of light flashes between long pauses and you have the first digit of the error code (one through four). Repeat 3 more times so that you have the four digits of each code.

It's just the industry standard for OBDI back then. Very basic. Very useful.

I only speak for myself but I think this would be AWFUL in a 355... Cool invention for some cars maybe a retromod Mustang, Hot Rods, 80's cars, but for the love of god- NOT A 355!!!

I might be interested if you can make it doable in the 355 5.2.
I would be even more interested if the screen display were like that of the 360/430 CH,GT cars.

    Any ideas of final cost?

I can see people who use their 348/355s primarily for track action going for a digital dash with the kind of telemetry info like what Motec provides

I like the look of the Veglia analogue instrumentation myself.

There was a giallo 355 with yellow gauge faces on ebay or something. I would not mind either red or silver on mine. I could not find a source on these....

This is quite an interesting and ingenius idea. The prototype looks great. I think you may really be on to something here.

Expanding on what has already been mentioned, I would be especially interested if the unit had a text area to which it could send a translation of any errors that are causing the "Check Engine" light(s) to illuminate.

For example, a text bar in the dash would read "throttle position sensor" or what-have you.

Attached find a data sheet that translates what the check engine lights are communicating in onboard diagnostic mode. You can find a discussion of how to pull the codes here.
    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=64917

Would such an instant translation be possible with text?

Oh, and could you get an oil temperature reading on the dashboard? How about fuel range, tank content, etcetera?

    Regards,
    David

I want a red "Moron alert" light. It should have a remote trigger. So when I give the car to my friend to drive, I could surreptitiously trigger it if the goof muffs a shift or something. :D :D

Tom, I really appreciate you taking the time to offer your services. It is nice to have skilled professionals that are willing to look at innovative ways of improving the marque. I would not take all the negativity expressed as the prevaling concensus of all Ferrari owners. IMO a digital dash has great potential in providing an unpresidented level of real time data, that far exceeds the limitations of the OEM arrangement. I, along with some of the most respected names in the Ferrari community worldwide, are in the process of designing and building major performance upgrades which may require this type of dash instrumentation. If so, we will contact you to see if it is possible for you to design and build a set-up that will meet our requirements.

    Again, thanks for the post,
    Bruce

I may be missing something here but why can't you keep the outer ring of Ferrari oem features like the cel's etc and then just add in a Motec dash or a Jotec dash for everything else? I forget what Jotec had but his dash like motec allowed all the DA features you could want (gps too) and they are proven. I think Jotec was or is a FC sponcor. Also, someone needs to check how much change you can have in a dash before the FEDs or some state like the peoples republic of california get their undies in a bunch. Something about keeping oem functioning CEL's as part of the smog devices??? But you could digitize the 348/355 dash if you like bigger digital guages. Everything is a bit tight on the Motecs and Jotec dash and the SPA for that matter but I have seen some slick setup with the dash in the upper part of the steering wheel.

    David,

Thanks for the info, as I was going to look for the info that you attached on the codes. That would be something that could be added, I'll just have to look into it further. And yes I could add oil temp and other items to the dash as an option. Not sure about the fuel range though.

    Thank again for the info!

Is the 355 5.2 a different version of the 355? I havn't seen the 360/430 dash so I would have to take a look at one.
Not sure about final cost as its to soon to figure that out.
