I've always felt that having Les film himself made the show less authentic. For one, he's got to do almost everything at least twice so that he can set up cameras. For another, he's limited in what he can do because he has to lug all that gear everywhere he goes. Finally, you just can't capture everything on film if you're the only one out there.

I realize that part of the authentic experience is being completely isolated and Bear doesn't have that with his camera crew, but Les knows that he's getting picked up in 7 days so neither one is in a truly desperate situation to begin with (relatively speaking).

It does seem a little more awkward. Not to mention the energy involved with this. I'd think this limits the guy's ability to "free flow" and concentrate on survival techniques. He's just barely surviving just trying to get that special camera shot ;)

Either way, they might not have all of the abilities to "bear" their way out, but watching the show is only educating. It is simply giving people information they might remember/need in a dire situation. If they only pick up three tips and this allows them to survive for another day, the show has done its job. Whether people watch the show wanting to learn tips or solely for entertainment purposes, survival tatics are still being registered. Sure things are for show and spiced up a bit, but all situations are realistic. We need more TV like this instead of reality shows with people sitting around gossiping about each other. GREAT SHOW

I love the show, except for the word "orientated." It's not a word, is it?

When you get knocked on the head, are you 'disoriented' or 'disorientated'?

I guess it depends on how hard you get knocked!

I wouldn't use the word orientated either, but it is in fact a word (which is what you asked).

What about the one (in Alaska in think) where he climbs down a waterfall? I find that one something the normal person, even in desperation, would not do.

Was that the episode where he was up on a glacier and had to get down to lower elevation before nightfall? If so, he was facing a difficult choice and picked the best option for himself. Getting caught up on a glacier at night without shelter would be a death sentence for most people.

That episode had some decent tidbits in it, like the thing about the blue ice, I didn't know that blue ice was fresh ice and was also more likely to crack if your under it.

prudence is right, if someone learns a thing or 2 from the show and it saves their life, then the show was worth it. I have certainly learned a couple of things from the show.

Under the circumstances this might have been the only option. I'd rather know the possibilities rather then someone just giving up. He's always big on following water as it usually leads to civilization plus it's a quicker way to travel.

2 new episodes tonight? (and probably replayed randomly over the weekend)

    9:00
Bear offers survival tips in Scotland's Cairngorms National Park. Included: using moss to purify water; skinning a deer; cooking a rabbit.

    10:00
Bear gets up close and personal with sharks in the Pacific, where he also must deal with rip currents and pounding surf. Included: previously unseen footage and new survival techniques.

Yeah it is more authentic, but Les Stroud has not once made a bow and arrow and used it in all his episodes. Kind of a letdown , especially for a bow/arrow guy like myself. I mean c'mon, something as basic/primitive like a bow and arrow? You cant make one??

And how about that episode where he caught/cooked the lizard, then chose to throw away the head??????? You dont throw away the head in the jungle when you are hungry, F Chat members!!

+1. Also like his narration of Deadiest Catch vs. the original guy.

I wish Man vs. Wild would show who 'rescues' him, and their expressions on seeing this crazy guy appearing out of the blue.

I think it was the one in Africa, he comes upon a house or building. It looked like he just walked in, no one was home.

I don't think so. I was watching his episode where he's stranded in the rain forest and at the end they did a shot that would be impossible with normal camera equipment. They would have to have used something brought to the site, not carried around, and the shot was done just after he arrived at this place, before he "went to see the locals".

I think the pick up crew has a destination to meet him at. I'm sure the camera crew carries GPS's so they know which way to go, and where to end up.

He's not really just thrown into some desolate area and expected to make it somewhere....

Respectfully, why do you think that? It seems that you've been bashing the show a bit, but haven't really offered up anything to substantiate your stance.

Well it does appear that o'l Bear and Co. are catching a little flak.

"Discovery's "Wild" man not so brave: report

Discovery Channel is re-evaluating one of its most popular series, "Man vs. Wild," after allegations surfaced that its survival-expert host was bunking in motels when he was supposed to be braving the great outdoors."

"But among the charges made against Grylls is that a raft he is depicted as having built himself actually was constructed and then disassembled by consultants to the show in order for the host to put it together. In another episode, Grylls happens upon what are referred to as wild horses that were said to be brought in from a trekking station."

I still think it's a great show although it takes a little creative license here and there. ;)
