I just recently bought my 308 cam belts from a great parts dealer and an outstanding guy. (you think he will fix my order after that compliment?)

Anyway, from what I can decipher the new belts are made in 2000, is that too old to install?

    Who knows?

The wear on the belts and the time underhood are the aging factors, IMO......

They don't get any wear, in the dark, in a box!!!

Maybe a Tech with chime in here, tell your brother he's missed!

Normally, I would say, lets all send Brian (rifeldriver) an e-mail telling him how his tallents are missed. But if we all did that, and his mail box got jammed full, I probably wouldn't get a Christmas card from him this year.....

he does enjoy a good bottle of wine, and I know his home address...lol

We had this discussion last year (?). Do a search under "timing belt shelf life". I think the consensus was just make sure you buy them from a dealer that has regular turnover. I bought a pair that were Pirelli Isorans so you know they were several years old. Now it is true that they are not under stress or even exposed to light if they are in the box, but I bought a second set from the f dealer. Once I got them and compared the two the newer ones were more supple and flexable. So I used them. Just boxed the old ones back up.

It would be interesting to get a definitive answer...perhaps someone knows someone in the rubber dept of dayco or something.

When I was dealing with Gates techs on the new cam/belt design it was explained to me that yes they will age and eventually rot just sitting in a box. the rubber will breakdown all on it's own over time, how much time? hard to say but by yr 3 they wouldn't use them.

even tires are date stamped because they will rot sitting around as well. the belts for other manufacturers don't sit around on the shelf, even the f-belts are used in other applications.

I would send them back. SEVEN year old "new" belts? Uh, no.

Sending someone a 7 year old belt is irresponsible. For what it cost in time and money to replace them, you want to start with something new. In 3 years you'll be running 10 year old belts for god's sake!

I read the posting from a while back, if it's acurate they are 7 years old, I guess the only way to be sure is to contact DAYCO and ask before I get too excited. There is too much labor to install old belts.

Considering the time, money and effort required to change the belts why take a chance? …not to mention your subconscious messing with your head wondering if those old belts are going to make to make it over the next hill.

I agree, I have no records on my cam belts is why I want to change them. Right now I feel like there is a gernade in the back and the pin may...or may not have fallen out.
From what I am seeing in replacement belts the ones on the car could be newer than the ones I just bought.

I just got off the phone with DAYCO customer support.

The belts I bought have a date code of 07036181. The code is printed across the belt about 6 times and the last number increments by 1 on each printing.

DAYCO explained what almost everyone here already knows, but since there at least 2 of us who don't....here goes.

The first 2 digits are the month (07 is July)
The second 2 digits are the year (03 is 2003)
The last 4 digits are batch (who cares!)

My belts are 0703, made in July of 2003.

DAYCO claims to have a minimum of a 6 year shelf life when properly stored,

    I'M GOOD !

Nah, my life lives in a cardboard shoebox, padner....

I have a closet full of framed Jay Koka prints, high dollar stuff .....come by and pick one out...

Valeria just gave me the one room to use, for my Study, and her son takes it over when he crashes in for Summer Break.

There's some other good ones from the trip, of the blue car in the snow at Yosemite...or on a plateau over Mono Lake in the sunset......
