This is a kind of a test post with a few pics. I am more of a lurker than a poster here, but I guess I am in the right mood to share a bit. I always enjoy pics and particularly Newman's car history (if you read this great job, I appreciate what you are doing).

Short history...I bought this car a few years back, had some delays to starting the restoration process, but getting pretty serious now. Anyway getting close to paint. NOT GOLD!

Car was in very good shape, full records, about 90,000 miles and just needed to be refreshed. So, here we go...complete strip down and rebuild. This is my third time (with other cars) and I am still dumb enough to do it yet again. My form of therapy.

Anyway, I am not the best most frequent poster, but if any interest I will post a few pics along the way.

First couple of pics is basically a before shot, and the current stage (though I am about ready for paint). I stripped down old finish, not to metal in all cases, but at least to primer by DA sanding, and then epoxy primed, and sprayed K36, and have blocked for about 100 hours (and 3 resprays of primer surfacer). Lots of work, but it is what makes a paint job look good.

Anyway...hope you enjoy a few pics. I will get a few more going later.

Was this Lynda Carter's old car? The actress from Wonder Woman? Her 1970s Gold 308 was on eBay a few years back.....

Anyway, glad to see one more will survive!

    Bring it on, man!

I agree it's not necessary to go to bare metal, besides the original lead in these cars is now deemed unhealthy!

    Let those sleeping dogs lie........

That gold is a little unusual.........what do you like in the way of colors?

Well, I had posted about this before and I think the consensus was to keep the original gold. But I just don't care for it. I have decided to go with the Rossa Corsa. Sorry to be so boring, but it is just the easiest decision. I really like the grays/silvers also however.

Yea, that gold looks a little flat to my eye.......even under shop lighting.

Heck, go with that PPG paint that changes colors when you walk by! LOL!

As these cars get rare original color may be important, two of my three wear original shade, but the third one is RED!

Was originally blue.......but I have another blue one.....

Color decision is perhaps the hardest part of restoring a car. My choices came down to gold, red, silver, or black. Although there is a part of me that would love to stay the original color I frankly believe original color means as in not repainted at all. So going gold again is only sort of "original". Thus, the door is wide open color wise but I am at least trying to respect the Ferrari lineage of colors. And hence Rossa Corsa is the "gold standard" if you will of Ferrari isn't it?

By the way I do like that matte black! But, still I am going red....

With today's paint quality the gold will look really great. The 80's cars were not painted in a 2 stage process (base coat, clear coat) like cars of the 90's and current.

You can lay down the color coat and build the clear between color sanding and re-spraying. It is also possible to change the hue of the color based on the number of clear coats applied... it just gets richer and richer.

I remeber a GTB that was the same color as your car but with a deep front spoiler.. it was beautiful!

I say go for the Gold!!

    Good luck whatever you choose!

I was going to say the same thing the old color looked somewhat 'flat' but you could punch up the level of flake and get it to "bling' in the sunlight! LOL!

Also agree on the difference from the old paints vs. new formulations....

I have had lots of trouble with white on one of my cars, go figure!

:( It is your car and you can do what you want, but I think an original (gold is the original color, right?) unique color is a very distinguished part of owning a vintage car. Besides, 70s gold is a great color.

My father restored this 206 and actually had it painted red when we found out that #10523 was the first production 206. The urban ledgend proclaimed purple to be Enzo or Dino's favorite color. So this one came from the factory in purple. Needless to say it was repainted back to the original purple. Too bad he sold it.

Anyway, looks like good work on your 308, keep the pictures coming!

My car is "resale red" as they call it. The original color according to my Heritage Certificate is "oro chiaro" or clear gold. If I ever repaint my car I'm leaning toward returning it to its original color. Classic cars are allways worth more the more original they are. That may not mean anything to you now, but later?

I would think the difference between painting it the original color and changing it to red would be very minimal. Most people would choose red over gold in a 308 and whether it was the original color or not would probably only matter to someone looking for a low mileage unrestored car, not a 90,000 mile restored car. I am not a collector though. My car was originally silver and had it completely repainted the original color, but only because I love silver, if my car was originally red it would probably be silver today. Paint it the way you want it. It is not a 1 of 10 California Spyder or a 410 SA it is a one of 14,000+ 308 GTS. Just my two cents.

Guys, thanks for the comments, but you illustrate a few things about this whole "original is better" concept.

The suggestions of better modern paints and clearing techniques, more blingy, etc., is to me your way of saying "well original sort of, but even better". Well I agree, but that just simply ain't original. Original is original. By definition a restored car is not an original car. I had an original car that I am restoring. To increase value is not my motive. For my pleasure, yes. Is it more valuable when I am done, compared to when I started, probably. Not really my concern or motivation though. It is simply a pleasure to work on and restore one of the truly classic iconic cars of our time. In my opinion it will be better than it was, and live a longer life. I saw a thread about someone parting out an older 308 that was basically operable. Geez, how sad is that? There is an original, someone shuck out 50G's for that valuable original if you really believe in that value theory.

Restored to original is kind of an oxymoron isn't it? I understand and appreciate the concept and like many of you have seen beautiful examples. However, I still like seeing the rare real deal, a true original. Not repainted, not anything but driven and well taken care of. That sweet patina of time if you will.

Just my .02. and just having fun. Appreciate your comments!

Paint it [matte black] whatever color [matte black] you want [matte black].

Seriously, if they ever become so valuable that the original color is important, then you can always repaint it back to gold then. For now, enjoy it as it's meant to be enjoyed. And if you'll enjoy it more in matte black (err, red) then so be it.

The trend in Ferrari colors right now is anything but red. So buck the trend, and paint that sucker Rossa! :)
