Power Steering for the 348

Yup - potential buyer said he'll have cash ready in August. But like you, I'm not going to actively put it on the market. Either I sell it to this guy, or I keep it for now.

In know situation is better in Malaysia than S'pore, but it's still a pain for find a nice '95 F355 that's in good condition and with the crema or tan interior. They don't seem to grow on trees as in the US (or UK). So, if the 348 deal comes through, I may be f-carless until I find the right F355 (gasp! how did I ever go through life without one prior to the 348?). I may have to compromise on the interior color (and upgrade it later) and if I really get desperate, then I'll settle for a post-95 (OBDII/5.2 motronic) model - figured it'll be easier to change interior rather than ECU and engine.

I'm not sure how much lowering the front end weight by a few kgs would reduce steering effort. I suppose a test would be to put a 10kg bag of potatoes (very scientific..) in the trunk and see if the steering actually feels any heavier.

 

That would be a good test of the sprung weight reduction, but you'd need weights added to the wheels to apply the same concept to an unsprung weight test.


Or you could just do it my way (I suggested the lighter weight as a test in the first place).

 

I don't understand why there would be a difference in stationary or low speed steering effort between sprung/unsprung weight. Is it more complex than I am thinking? I understand the basic effect of unspung weight on suspension dynamics, but when parking the car weight is weight is it not?

A set of super lightweight wheels costs more than a sack of spuds, and you can't make a plate of chips with them after


I'm with you on the electric idea. Was there not a 'universal' power column available from somewhere that could be used?

 

Rotational inertia doubles the effective weight/resistance/mass. Sprung weight isn't being rotated! Of course, when stationary there is no rotation, so that doesn't apply when not moving at all.

It was listed last year by the same dealer.

I can attest to that. After switching from the boat anchors to the Challenge wheels, those almost 9 pounds per corner of unsprung weight made the steering noticably lighter.

Will install the Girodiscs soon that shave off another 6 pounds or so per side.

I dont remember this car. Does it REALLY have p/steering?

 

In my opinion, the best way in to use an electrical system on the steering column....
Seems to be easy to install and to put back in original condition.

 

I have the challenge wheels & its no joy when parrallel parking at all.I cant imagine it could be worse.A dumb question from a dumb person but my battery is mounted in rear on drivers side,arent they all?

 

Nope. All of the 348 Spyders, and many late model 348s, have the battery in the front, as do all 355s (355s also have power steering).

 

2nd to the last picture of that car, engine compartment. Note the electric box on the left side above the spark plug wire distributor. Is that part of the power steering and could it be electric?

 

No, silly. That's the flux capacitor.

 

Hey Harold, What's the COE tax for a 348 Ferrari there in Spore. I been there twice paying golf and visiting friends, Beutiful city/state

 

So my question now is was it moved to the present location (mounted in the rear on drivers side)or did it come that way?

 

Would be a factory fit I reckon.

Your all wrong! Clearly this is an ELECTRIC CAR! I thought my 348 got decent milage, but hey if you got a couple million feet of extension cords... IMAGINE THE POSSIBILITIES!!!
