I'm not really thinking of doing this and I know the subject has come up before, but I was offered a good Testarossa in the UK for around 70KAUD.Again I'm not really considering it but was curious at what price would the car have to be to make it justifiable?

Thats like $24 000 GBP right?

    Car MUST be pre 12/1988

Add shipping costs at around $4500 AUD.
    Plus sea insurance at 1.75%

Then customs duty at 10% on purchase price.
Then add freight value landed in Oz.
    Then add GST @ 10%
Then add up all that and for every aussie dollar over $57 009 add 25% luxo car tax.

Should all add up to arounf $96 500 ready for compliance in Australia.

Then add compliance cost (including emissions testing and fittment of CAT converters)

Then add rego and stamp duty at 4% of book value.

Not much change out of $120 k AUD.

I've done it twice and my cars cost more in the UK than $24k GBP!

And A$135,000 buys a perfect Testarossa in mint condition that is already here with all the work done. Not worth the trouble of going it alone to import something you cannot even inspect without flying to other side of the world. You have to factor in time as well, from purchase to getting a number plate on the car, maybe 3 months ?

So does the luxury car tax apply regardless of the age of the car?? If so, the bill on the 250SWB that recently came in must have been HUGE

Thanks Robert and Andrew you were the people I was thinking of when posting and have given all the answers. The particular car was 1991 so that automatically goes out the door. The car was around 28000 pounds though.I know of the current local prices but didn't know how much more was needed and obviously on your calculations it wasn't worth the heartache. It was just something that I had pondered since my dad had always wanted a Testarossa. He currently owns a Mustang 67 fastback that he's had since 1974

Gotta say, even if I could afford a new 500k car I would pass on it due to the add on tax,its IMO not good value paying half of the cars value in tax,and then there is the lack of tax deductions.

The grigo metalica car in QLD is a LHD rough conversion. i looked at it a year ago and wouldn't even contemplate it.

There are other cars here in the $110 - $140k bracket but after personally inspecting 9 cars which all should have been in 'top' condition, I went to the UK to buy mine. Maybe I saved a bit, and after considering the importation and compliance hassles, then maybe I didn't, but at least I got a factory RHD built, two owner beauty in impecable condition. Far better than any that were on offer here at the time.

Yes, luxo tax applies irrespective of the year of manufacture.

Just on $150 000 AUD Luxo car tax on a 599 based on $650k purchase price. Nasty bloody government.

    Rob's comments are correct.
With the rising aussie dollar I too have considered bringing in a RHD TR but the numbers just don't add up, plus the market is really soft for TR's - they are nearly saleproof, so always good deals available locally.

I know of an ex LHD car that was imported and complied and coverted to RHD in the last 18 months that owes the owner more than 150K, which is IMHO well above the market value in Australia.

I't might be worth bringing in 30 year old LHD car from the USA, (limited compliance issues and strong currency) but there is nothing really affordable out there that is worth the hassle.

Seriously seriously doubt that cars like this ever come here now and are fully tax paid.

    Probably on a Carnet.

Sorry for any model specific ignorance.. but what is the significance of pre 12/1988?

I'd throw resale economic considerations out the window for a hard to get "keeper".

For me that'd be a clean 328 GTB. Classic forever shape & not too old with all that that means.

If the car comes in being manufactured on or after ther first month 1989, then it has to be complied through a RAWS shop in Australia. On a 512TR for example, that costs $30k to comply.

Pre 1/89 cars have to meet emission standards for Aus delivered cars of the same era and pass on things like side intrusion bars etc. Will cost $3 - $5k to comply earlier cars as a rule of thumb.

I have seen T/R's here for AUS$100k, yeap no official importation of this model, but these here already have rego. and ready to go.That was a black one in QLD., a bloody good buy if you ask me [ie lots of car for the coin]

I *think* if you want to import, have a look around H.K., freight will be less, price will be less and the speedo is in KPH too.Heaps of Benzs and Rollers coming in from HK.Or even Japan

    Cheers

    Ouch - I see.

Is that $30K something specific to 512TR or will cost similar for other f-cars?

If those are the relativities then when the time comes will avoid that last of line '89 MY GTB and go for an '88 then!

Would bringing a car in under the personal import (owned/used o/s) change those numbers.. or is it that assumed in this case?
