Hello to all, I have just removed my 355 engine from my home garage. It was the best thing I have ever done and really good to see and learn all about the Ferrari engine. I must admit I have been reading a few threads beofre I started and in the end it was relatively easy. The total time taken was 7 hours. The actual time to remove the engine after all connections were taken off was only 0.5 hour. Contrary to some posts in forums that the engine has to be turned 90 degrees to come out through the wheel arches we actually pulled it out from the rear. I have posted some pics including a pic showing one side of the car collapsing due to the pressure in the jack failing. This was where I almost had a heart attack!!! but thankfully OK. I can't seem to post any other pics as they exceed the file size. If anyone can let me know what I have to do the other pics i have show alot of steps of how it is done. It must be an Aussie thing.... Welcome to the "My Ferrari has no engine and I did it" club.... Let me know if you need any parts
Wow that is a scary moment! This should be a commercial for jack stands... Do post more pics and details of what you're doing. I'm tempted to try the same thing this winter just for fun
Actually it doesn't come out the wheel arches, and it does come out the rear. It also depends on the lifting height of your floor jack. If your floor jacks can get the body up enough then you don't have to rotate it. But quite a few jacks don't and thus you need to rotate the engine to get the shock towers out from the back. It's so that the shock towers can clear the cross brace, which the top exhaust heat shield gets mounted too. Anyway, glad to hear to got yours out. Looking forward to seeing the pics, and welcome to F-chat.
as Eddie Murphy said..."What the GOOLY-GOOGOO is going on!". Tell me you are a trained mechanic - please.
Hi all, Do get something straight this was not done by myself. It was done by a ferrari mechanic and I helped out. When the car did drop due to the failure of one jack there were stands underneath as the car was being lifted. That is why it stopped at that point. More importantly I wanted to share my experiences with fellow Ferrari owners and of course share what can happen at certain points. All in all the procedure is very simple and now I plan on spending sometime cleaning the engine as well as doing all the belts etc. Will post some other pics soon. P.S. Us Aussies like a good challenge!!
Thats what I was thinking. Well, not so much being a 'trained' mechanic, but someone with some mechanical aptitude should know better than to ONLY use a floor jack to hold a car up!! Car needs to be placed on chassis stands!! Especially when doing this job!! Aussie355, mate, you never, ever......EVER trust the seals in the jack! They can let go anytime and cause harm, injure or kill someone!! You found out 1st hand, and we are all glad that you were not under the car when the jack failed mate. Here is a pic of how it can be done, using chassis stands. I reccommend going out tomorrow and buying 2 chassis stands to place under you 355, before you install engine and put yourself or others in danger. Image Unavailable, Please Login
I cant see any chassis stands anywhere under there! Did the stands do any damage to the underside of the car mate? Glad you know the importance of them and glad no one was hurt when it came crashing down. I am also looking forward to more pics. You got that right!!
Hi PAP348, There were stands underneath the car when the jack had given way. The stands were only as high as they had to be at that point. When we continued to jack we raised the stands slowly. Had we have not done this then the whole car would have collapsed. The stands are in exactly the same position as your picture. In fact i will post picture shortly showing 4 stands in total under the car. Thanks for the advice and concern. Type image resizer into google and pic the 3rd site down in the listings. You can change the size of the pic and as a result the file size will decrease also, Then just save the pic to your desktop.
Today was a good day and a BAD day. As we embark on this engine out job we just find little problems and then realise that is another part we need so parts keep mounting and of course the bill!!! We took the camshafts out today and found out whoever did any work on the car before I bought it had the chisel marks not aligned properly.Anyway we fixed that then as we were working away we noticed the CV boots were torn. In fact whoever did work before decided to keep them tight with a cable tie!!! Lucky they didn't give way on my last track day. At the same tme the hall sensors at the front of the cam shaft need replacing including the leaking main line oil hose. The we found the breather pipe hose damaged as seen in the photo. But Dan from Ricambi America has come to the rescue supplying all parts for this job and truly outstanding service. THANKS DAN!!! But in the end we were able to get the cams back in and the belt and tensioner bearings in.This should make the car go much better than before. So while I was busy spending more money on parts I decided to get a set of Hyperflow cats as well. Why not!!!!!!! Next week I will post some photos of the new CV boots including heat shields remade, oil tank resprayed and the engine looking nice and new. We plan to then fit it back in and hopefully by mid August we can go driving again Hope you enjoy the photos. 355Aussie- When you put the bearings on the tensioner brackets, did you spin them by hand to ensure they spin nice and free? Early cars which have never had a proper major service could still be running the old brackets which have a protrusion too thick to allow smooth turning of the bearing. PM or email me if you have any questions. If you didn't notice anything unusual, you're probably fine. -d
Your really playing with your life if you use just a jack while getting under a car without jack stands. Almost all these jacks now days are all made in China and just another example of the crap that comes from there. I've had two fail so far, the one I have now is still made in China with double cylinders but I still don't trust it. I tried to find a jack made in the USA locally but couldn't fine one. One of them I came home with that was bought from a store (No Names) that use to sell good stuff failed while trying to lift my stripped Por. 911 shell, couldn't even do that. I brought it back to the store for a refund and the salesclerk said sorry but what do you expect it's made in China, their good for about a year. I do all my mechanical work now on a lift made in the USA, need to be careful here too as many lifts are imported from China. The company I bought my Lift from changed owners and now they only Import lifts from China, they told me I have the better lift than what they sell now. The word is use caution when lifting a car and research what you buy.
Cool pics mate. Car is going to be better than ever when you are done. Looking forward to seeing more pics.
