i can accept the spoiler, it can look good (esp colour coded :p) the bumperette though is frankly laughable. Both however are most definetly an afterthought

the word afterthought is not derogatory (nor did i mean it as such)
however it is the correct word.

    from dictionary.com
"Afterthought - something added, as a part or feature, that was not included in the original plan or design"

as for built from scratch - that depends how you look at it.
    each individual car yes certainly.
the overall design no - it was modified from the original - its not the car as Enzo intended.
In fact if you take the information as true that its a very different car from, the original - and that this was a defined, intended and redesigned series of car then its not really an example of the last car introduced within the lifetime of the great man

thats not to say they might not appreciate them more with bigger brakes, euro seats, colour coded here and there.

you do know its not immoral to modify a car away from factory spec dont you joe :p

    Dear Comrade chaos,

I am in total agreement with all that you say. And Joe, rather surprisingly, has gone completely over-the-top with his 'built from scratch' comment. The Euro car was the original. And the US version, whilst very nice, was modified from the Euro version to suit the US legislation. There is just too much 'talking-up' of the US car. No one does it with the Euro F-40 because of course there is no need to. The bumperette on the rear, and the moustache on the front of the US F-40 is at odds with the design. That's a fact. It does not make the US F-40 a bad car. It is just that the Euro car is better and Joe himself has said that the Euro should have the nomenclature of 'F-40 Lightweight' and this is why he has been recommended for a knighthood in our Queens's New Years Honours List :)

And regarding your other post . . . . . Joe has molested his US specification F-40 with a modification, namely, by the fitment of a TUBI zorst pipe. This is not a malicious rumour, it is the truth.

    With kind regards,

    512 Tea Are

words like better and worse arent really applicable here.
the looks are down to personal choice and unless a magazine tests both versions back to back on real roads and comes out with a clear winner for handling and performance then you cant call one better than the other.

I must clarify that it was not I who 'molested' my F40 with a Tubi, but the very first owner of the car, none other than Paul Allen himself. After driving the car just once, the billionaire Microsoft co-founder determined that his F40 would benefit from a Tubi exhaust sytem in a multitude of ways and instructed that one be fitted forthwith. However, he kept the original system in a box and today it lives not 6 feet away from my car in the garage. So you see, my point is that I had no say in the matter of fitting the car's Tubi. However, I am not complaining :)

I know when to bow out gracefully from a matter of irreconcilable differences. Europeans love their version of the F40. Americans love theirs. That matter will never be settled.

One statistical matter that can never be disputed though: the USA F40 is approximately 6 times more rare than a Euro F40. Since relatively rare cars appeal to me, I will accept that fact as consolation :)

How would the F40 Preservation Foundation react if one was to fit Speedline wheels as well as an adjustable rear wing to his F40 ?

The business end with a (pesky) Tubi unit installed :) Note the USA flag on the quarter window serving as a small reminder that this is a USA series car: 6 times as rare as a Euro F40, which I might have mentioned before...

    Re the 288 GTO

There were/are GTOs out there with colour coded external trim.

See Ferrarissima #20 where Marcel Massini did an article on these cars

    Dear Comrade joe sackey,

Yes, you are wholly exonerated by the English contingent of F-40 Ferrraristii for the fitment of the Tubi zorst pipe. This has made me wonder whether the English F-40 that resides here may be one of but few that is totally unmolested and still fitted with the original zorst, and may I say, original everything else. It even has the tyre pressure transfer on the windscreen. No patriotic flag as on the American version though to differentiate it from the original - for they were the originals :) I am to rise early tomorrow morning at a half past four o'clock (Sunday) and allow it to take me on a jaunt through manifold English villages.

In Paul Allen's defence, I must say that it was likely a moment of weakness that allowed him to request fitment of the aforementioned Tubi zorst. However, considering the delightful cacophony of snaps, crackles and pops that emanate from said device (not to mention the thrill to following motorists of two-foot flames on the overrun), I have determined that its presence shall indeed remain.

Please affix a Union Jack upon your windshield so that the villagers whom you encounter upon your travels tomorrow will be able to determine that yours is a true original Lightweight F40...

    Dear Joe,

I have just come down from the roof space where I have fitted a winch for the hall chandelier that was delivered but yesterday and is being hoisted this very eventide. However, I must counter your missive regarding the Union Jack. I can do better than that you which you have suggested. For I have within my possession the most magnificent rendition of the 'Flag' of your homeland. Yes Joe, the 'Stars and Stripes' are here in England and were presented to me by my American friend in Florida. It is the size of a large tablecloth and it is the most magnificent of flags - all created from separate pieces. It has adorned the Rolls Royce on Remembrance Day when it has been laid across the bonnet (hood) accompanied with the Union Jack and where it has been to the ceremonies at the manifold wartime airfields hereabouts, and where your countrymen are remembered in November of each year. But tomorrow, I shall drape it across the English F-40 now replete as it is with the Joe Sackey nomenclature of 'F-40 Lightweight.' And for a moment in time, it will become a proper American F-40. I cannot do the uploading of images, and this notwithstanding, the images are in the Kodak Easyshare software and which, I understand, makes it doubly difficult. However, I shall take photograph's of the F-40 coddled within the American Flag and send them to you.

Best wishes from England to all our subjects within our colony of America.

    Joe,

This thread seeks to score on some level and hopefully provides great images & pics, good information both historical & technical, and market awareness, all as it relates to our limited series USA F40... Also a bit of light entertainment. After all, we cannot take ownership of these cars too seriously can we?

    Dear Comrade joe sackey,

I am pleased to report that the hall chandelier is now safely installed and its winch is working supremely well. However, I am not sure about the promised early morning excursion through villages of England. For it is teeming with rain here and the weather is more akin to November than July. So it is most unlikely that I shall venture onto the Queens highway in such inclement conditions. Therefore, the promised images of the 'Lightweight F-40' replete with the American Flag must be postponed until the sun peeks out again. So sorry to disappoint you but there it is. However, we've a nice fire in the hearth so not everything is bad by any means. So as not to completely disappoint you I shall endeavour to transmit images of the 'Lightweight F-40' fitted out with oars lest the rain becomes worse and floods occur down here. You may well have heard on the wireless that parts of England has become flooded and I do not intend to be caught out should the precipitation become worse.

    With kind regards,
