This is the new FerrariChat.com server. All basic forum functionality should be working. You will notice a few icons missing and some add-on software like the banners and FerrariAds.com may not work properly for a few days.

Please ask any questions or report any issues here. I will keep everyone updated.

    Thank you,
    rob lay

any chance you could configure this to remember read/unread status by thread and not by session? 6speed has that feature (porsche site) and it is nice since if you only have 5 minutes or so, you can do a quick check for new threads that you care about and then when you come back, any thread you haven't read is still bolded. Also works great for wireless.

Can you tell I'm an addict? ;)

Not sure I completely understand, but if someone can give me a heads up on the vB config or hack to do this I'll look at it more. thanks.

Let me explain and I've also done some poking around at the vbulletin site and I think I've found the setting I'm talking about.

As far as the problem goes, here is my issue:

I regularly follow the following forums: ferrari discussion, technical Q&A, racing, collectibles, 348/355 model and mid altlantic region. I usually start with the 348/355 forum. My issue is that, lets say I have 10 free minutes, I look at the 348/355 forum, there is a thread of interest that I reply to which takes me a while. My 10 free minutes are up, so I have to go back to work and the only forum I've read is 348/355. All the threads I have NOT read in the other forums of interest automatically get marked as read since I did not have a time to go look at them. So when I come back to fchat hours later, there is stuff that I have not read that is marked as read since I only went to the 348 forum in my previous session.

The fix is to keep read/unread status by thread, and not by session.

    Does that make sense?

Now from the vbulletin 3.5 support options page (http://www.vbulletin.com/docs/html/main/vboptions_group_general) it shows:

    Thread/Forum Read Marking Type
This option controls how threads and forums are marked as read. The options are:

    1) Inactivity/Cookie Based - once a user has been inactive for a certain amount of time (the value of the cookie timeout option) all threads and forums are considered read. Individual threads are marked as read within a session via cookies. This option is how all versions of vBulletin before 3.5 functioned.
    2) Database (no automatic forum marking) - this option uses the database to store thread and forum read times. This allows accurate read markers to be kept indefinitely. However, in order for a forum to be marked read when all threads are read, the user must view the list of threads for that forum. This option is more space and processor intensive than inactivity-based marking.
    3) Database (automatic forum marking) - this option is the same as a previous option, but forums are automatically marked as read when the last new thread is read. This is the most usable option for end users, but most processor intensive.

I think what is needed is option (3) which makes the most sense, namely read state is kept by thread, but forum state is marked as read if you just go into it. It says it uses more CPU, so I don't know if that is a problem for you or not.

    Hope this helps,

    -Eric

The following is the issue though...

However, I can ask some other admins the true performance impact.

no problem, definitely keeping state per user in the db is going to increase your machine's load by some amount. I really appreciate you looking into it :)

There were some issues with the old version of FerrariAds.com. I'm going to upgrade and integrate the ads more into the forums. Hopefully I get that finished tonight.

One of the issues was old ads not clearing out, so we'll start scratch and I apologize to anyone that has to reenter current ads.

    Thanks,
    rob

I have yet to subscribe, however, should I wait until the server updates are "shaken out" before subscribing? Is the subscription area secured on the new server?

I haven't specifically tested subscriptions yet and I can't view my email right now to confirm. However, even if the interfaces between Paypal or 2Checkout (cc) aren't working, I will still have record of your subscription with them. So there should be no issues with subscribing right now.

    Thanks,
    rob

    Rob,

Since a week or two now, I have to login over and over again.
Even to make this post I had to login in, even I was logged in some minutes ago.
I'm having this problem since one day it was impossible for me to enter the Forum.
It seems the fact that my login and pasword aren't remembered anymore.
Even by changing from one thread to another it makes me entering the login.
A second problem is that by re-logging in, everything is marked as being read.
Can you please help me with this one ?
Perhaps the solution is easy but I can't find it.

    Eddy

First step is select Remember Me when you login. If that doesn't fix it, you need to change your browser settings to accept cookies. If that doesn't do it, then something with a firewall on your end is keeping the cookies from being saved. Let me know.

Doesn't seem to be a noticable problem - however, on each page display (basically anywhere) I get the "Done, but with errors..." alert at the bottom left (IE) - says "unterminated string constant" always "char 23" usually around line 528 through 533.

    Rob,

If you turn on the script debugger in the browser it shows an error around line 500 that has to do with the "Open Buddy List" link.
The bad code looks like this:

    <tr><td class="vbmenu_option"><a href="#" onclick="window.open('misc.php?

    do=buddylist&amp;focus=1','buddylist','statusbar=no,menubar=no,toolbar=no,scrollbars=yes,resizable=yes,width=250,height=300'); return false;">Open Buddy List

    </a></td></tr>

The error is the fact that there are line feed characters in the middle of the quoted onclick tag. The "misc.php?" should be followed with the "do=buddylist" characters instead of the line feed. The first double quote is suppose to be matched up to the double quote right after the "return false;" characters. So, the error that everyone is getting is that the double quotes are not connected and results in an "unterminated string constant" error.

I hope this technical info helps.

Thanks for the trouble shooting, I can fix that easily enough tonight. Not sure if problem was from one of my customizations or a bug in new release that I upgraded to at same time of new server. Thanks again.
