I'm considering driving up form N Carolina to attend the Annual meet at the end of the month. The primary purpose would be to drive at Watkins Glen for the track days. My only experience with this track has been a video game (he he) and it looks a bit unforgiving with railing/armco's one either side. Probably safe, but it looks like even a small mistake could result in $100k of collision damage.

Any locals run this track on a regular basis? ... and care to offer some advice/cautions/encouragement? Most of my track time has been at Summit Point in W VA, and Ive done 5 events at that facility. Comparisons welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

I posted a link in NE also, lots of NE guys have run WGI extensively and the National event is being jointly run by the NER as well as ESR.

She's a Coton de Tulear. Similar, to a Maltese, but a bit larger, and more athletic. She runs 3 mi a day and loves going fast. :)

I want to sign up too but am afraid all track slots will be full by now. I'm waiting on confirmation that there are openings.

The Glen is no joke, its a serious track, They used to run F1 & Can Am there

That said as long as you keep your head & drive within your abilities you should be fine

The Esses are the best part of the track. The downhill into the sweeping uphill right into the Back Straight, where you should hit your top speed and hopefully slow down enough for the chicane!!!!(I missed the chicane once last month!)lol
Watched an EVO in my rear view spin and bite the armco, a Porsche Cayman wipe out , and a few other nameless wrecks!

Ok, Sounds Great, Maybe I should disconnect a spark plug or two ?

    Ps... The trouble with "follow-the-leader" is the assumption that the leader knows what he's doing...Hmmmmm? {i'm the one at the tail}

The problem with "Following the leader" is that you assume that he has and knows his line. 9 out 10 times they dont, or they take a slightly different line then you do. Watch the road and watch your line!!! I have played Follow the Leader too much and too many times heard OH SH>IT come out of my moutH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

the leader seems to be the owner of a 348...with his amazing choice in vehicle, he must know what he is doing. Now if it were a 360/430 etc it would be a different story:D

Damm theres a good joke in there somewhere but ill leave it at "Just show barry some men and youll see some great follow the leader"...not even gonna touch the mouth part of that quote....

    1. As of Tuesday afternoon, 7/31, there are still a few slots open for those who want to partake in the track portion of the event. www.fca2007.org.

    2. I'm actually the Chief Instructor for the event. WGI is one of my favorite tracks, and quite different from SP. Huge elevation changes, significantly bigger, and you do hit a higher top end. Challenging. And, yes, the armco is quite close to the edge of the track in many places, so it can be costly if you screw up - but there are also some huge gravel traps in many corners. Overall, though, it's an experience you'll never forget - flying up through the Esses and coming close to hitting redline in 5th as you approach the bus stop chicane....

    3. All students new to the Glen (or track events generally) will have an instructor assigned. There is no "lead/follow" - your instructor will work with you on finding the line, as well as the usual curriculum of track education.

    4. Keep in mind that this will be one of the biggest Ferrari events of the years. We expect to have over 250 Ferraris, and LOTS of race cars for the track event. The concours will be held on the main thoroughfare in downtown Corning, and we'll have a few thousand spectators for that too. Add in some nice gala dinners and other activities, and it'll be quite a weekend of fun.

Unfortunately, unlike other FCA track events here in the Northeast, it will be Ferraris and Maseratis only for the International Meet, due to the fact that it's, well, the FCA International Meet (and the track event will indeed sell out). You are welcome to drive other marques at other FCA track events here (at Pocono later this year, and at WGI and Lime Rock next year).

    Dennis,
It's great to hear from an expert. It looks like I'm on my way, and look forward to a chance to drive this historic circuit. Some good instruction will be essential, and I'm trying to find a video game of the track to get familier with the layout. Probably start out in the basic run group until I get familier with the layout and racing line. Like most guys with their street cars, I tend to drive a 8/10 not 10. and enjoy wth experience, without risking life / limb / sheetmetal.
With mostly Summit Point experience, I'm looking forward to a new track, and an experienced crowd.

    Cheers, Bob

Try to watch it a few times prior to attending Watkins Glen. It will help you in recognizing turns and establishing the correct line for you and your car....

WGI is indeed an amazing experience. I would like to see how many that have driven the track, consider the boot exit to be the most challenging corner to get right. Very hard to pick the line when you cant fully see the corner from entry to exit ! Overall I would not pass up the opportunity, juts be ready to get spoiled by the pavement quality if you at all used to a Limerock experience haha..

Howdy, all. Got this private message just now, so thought I'd reproduce it here in case anyone else was wondering. See you all in a few days!

Check out www.FCA2007.org - you can still register for the F2 or F3 package, depending on whether you want to come to the gala dinners or not. You can drive in the Rally on Friday morning, and the autocross on Friday afternoon too. You do need to be an FCA member to participate, however. As for entry to WGI, the contract with the track only permits F1/F2/F3 participants to enter the track. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Vty,

    --Dennis
