About 6 years ago I met a guy that had a temporary targa top, it folded up and was made of cloth it had suction cups that stuck to the rolled up windows. He had it on his 328, he used it when we would go out for lunch and couldn't find shade. He never had his real top with him. Has anyone seen anything like this? I did a search and found the one for the 348 that Ricambi tried to reproduce but that had a frame work and everything, this was much more like a thick sunshade.

    Thanks for any assistance.

there is a SoCal maker of tops that can do such if you send him a pattern. PM me and I'll email his link. He is on ebay too. you'll see John's covers under MONDIAL TOPS/BOOT covers..... some are leather or cloth, whatever you want...BUT HE is VERY SLOW....

I have one. It's black, folds together and has two suction cups on each side for the windows. When I get home I'll look at the name and post it for you.

I always thought thet would be a really cool idea for those times when you want have the top off but get, like caught in hot sun for longer than you thought ie traffic or that light shower of rain in summer. Just did not think anyone had done it.count me as interested to, any photo's??? Tone.

Would a Carbrella work? I see them for 911's and Corvettes. $144 Google it. It might just work with some mods.

That's what I have; Carbrella. Actually it is not a super convenient as it appears. At first glance it ia a great little idea and works well with the suction cups and all. However, it is a tri-fold design and when folded, it is kinda thick which makes it a little difficult to put away in the car when you are not using it. It will not fit in the trunk and if the top is stored away behind the seats (which is where mine stays - just in case I am out somewhere and it starts to rain) it is difficult to even put back there and get the seats back far enough. I like mine but I really only use it in the garage to "have a top" when mine is off just to keep dust, etc. out. If it folded into quarters so it could go in the trunk, it would really be the thing to have.

I bought mine from a guy at a Ferrari parts swap meet a couple years ago in Atlanta. I have no idea where he found it. He may have bought it new back in the 80's for all I know.

Maybe they can still make one for you. Notice the fine print on their web site on the products page at the bottom...

    It says:

"We still have patterns for several other car makes. However, due to the lack of intrest in some of these models, they are not in regular production. If your car is not listed, please contact us for price and availability."

If you don't get anywhere with these people give Harvey at First upholstery in Scottsdale a call. I'm sure he could make one for you. My dad has one of these for his vette and would be willing to let Harvey use it for design purposes.

    Update:

Mine has a little tag that has the number 1100 on it so I am assuming that the the product number for our cars. Also it does actually fit in the rear trunk. I have no idea why in the world I thought it did not. I think I was just remembering it not fitting in there with my overnight bag - which it won't. I bought it in Atlanta so it must have had to ride home with me inside the car.

So this is really not a bad little item to have.

I sent them an e-mail today. I'd like to have one just so I could leave the roof at home for shorter trips. It can be a pain dragging that thing around!

I asked if a group buy would make it easier or more likely for them to make some. We'll see what they say and I'll keep you all posted.

I guess I don't get it. What's the advantage to this? It takes no longer to put the correct top on the car, and this is just something additional to haul around?

It is easier for the lazy man like myself. My top stays behind the seats under the cover. I hardly ever put it on. To reinstall it I have to remove another 5% of the little black cap connector's life. If I am by myself I have to prop one seat foward with something to get the top out because it won't stay foward by itself. My latches don't fit that well only I know how to make them work without breaking them or tearing the leather strap. Removal is the reverse of installation...

With this little temp top I just pull it out and lay it on. That's it. Takes less time to do it than to type how. Keeps the sun out on a hot day when it's parked and the dust or whatever out when it's in the garage. It fits perfect and the 4 little suction cups give it plenty of retention.

You don't HAVE to have one but if you do you will appreciate it's usefullness.

I often use one of those windscreen shades that you put on the inside of the front screen to stop dashboards and interiors heating up. They have 4 suction cups, 2 on each side that you can attach to the side windows. It's not a snug fit of course but it works to keep the sun off the seats and cost over here is like $5. Try it - simple, effective, disposable and if the wind blows it away or someone steals it you can just get a new one ;-)
