I was driving this morning and noticed that when I passed a Mercedes truck in the slow lane, the driver immediately followed me and started talking into his Nextel.
He proceeded to call out my plate info and make and model of the car to whomever he was speaking to - Is it possible to get a citation from this?

    *confused*

a couple of weeks ago i was heading to the airport with matt (MMC Matt) following me. We got onto the turnpike and gunned it (i was going like 95-100, so he must have been going 100+ to catch me) and then we see this black car come up really fast and call in both our plates. He got between us like he was going to pull me over and called in my plate. Then he took off. Eventually we realized what was going on and we got to a stretch where there were no cops so we just gunned it to the exit:) i havent gotten anything. If they dont know whos driving its very hard to cite you personally.

What I find ironic is that he "took off" probably doing the exact same thing you were but he/she thinks they have this "power" to use over everyone else and thus the call-in.
Just another indicator of the crappiness of the society in which we live.

I'll have a drink later tonight to the end of privacy :)

yeah this car was def a cop though, loads of antennas on the back (which we saw after) but I agree why did he speed off (in excess of 95 mph) when we werent allowed to. If he had an emergency, his lights should have been on. Otherwise he should have called himself in as well.

I don't have the numbers off-hand, but you can get them from AAA.

One is a phone number to report agressive drivers which the police log. An officer might be dispatched, but otherwise nothing happens (that I know of)
the second is a NJ state agency that takes the call, incident, time, etc and will mail a non-binding letter to the reported offender about the offence that they "have been seen" and shouldn't do it again.

Perhaps this was one of those instances.

To report agressive driving, 1-888-SAF-ROAD (888-732-7623).
I haven't found the "issue letter" one yet.

And the car. I saw it Tuesday. There is still some body work to be done (though what has been finished looks very good) and the windshield is en-route from Maine.
I tasked the body shop to finish it by 8/11. We'll see. I hope.

How can you be so sure your plates were being called in? Most NY area cops have the ability to do that on their laptop and some have a plate scanner. I think you were just having your balls broken.

Yea, I'm with him. They cant do anything legally. A cop has to witness/trap the speed I believe.

We had a road block 2 weeks ago at the Lamborghini Run. 1st car of the caravan was going over a 100 and had a laser jammer when we saw the cop on the side of the highway getting speed readings. Cop pulled us all over, but didn't have a reading, just gave everybody a courtesy warning to take it easy and off we went. He said that they got calls, but they always say it, don't know how true it is...

    (#77 = 888-saf-road)
============ From the State Police web site =========
The #77 Aggressive Driver System should be used to report aggressive or erratic driving that poses a risk to other motorists on the roadway. While these calls are important, 9-1-1 calls are prioritized over #77 calls as required by law. In #77 call response, police services are made aware of the report and respond according to availability and proximity to the incident, as well as, seriousness of the report. This system should not be used to report 9-1-1 emergencies.

A cop can issue a ticket only for an offense he has witnessed. "You can sign the complaint," Della Fave said of the aggrieved driver, "but you have to agree to come to court and pursue it."

There's a catch to this story.

If someone tailgates you on Route 17 in Paramus and you call #77 on your phone, you better have a hands-free model. If you don't, a cop is going to pull you over because in Paramus it's illegal to use a hand-held model while driving. The Paramus police have issued about 50 such tickets since February, when the law took effect.

    ====================================================================================

I'm still searching for that phone number you call where the authorities look up a license plate # & send the owner a written warning...no luck so far

I get the cops called on me like its my job, they can't do anything unless they see you. They just knock on my door and try to scare me into thinking they can just because they got a "complaint about me".

    Exactly what he said.

The cop has to witness the "Violation" to issue a ticket. But that doesnt mean they can't pull you over based on a 911 call and harass the **** out of you.
Thanks to the invention called a CELL PHONE....everyone and their Soccer Mommy is calling 911!!!!!

Cops are trained - at least on L.I. - to estimate speed by eye. They need to take a refresher course every year. A civilian reporting that someone is speeding or was speeding when they caused an accident is useless information.

Good reminder of the poker run keith did. I got pulled over after stopping for gas driving normally to the restaurant that everyone else was already at. cop claimed there was a report of a corvette and 2 bmws racing. I pretty much laughed at him after he started being ****** to me. but he got me for my registration expiring the week prior.
