So I'm just starting to take up golf, I know, I'm about 15 years behind the trend. Anyway, like I said, just started, looking around to get lessons but I was wondering if anyone had advice on a good set of clubs to get to start? I'll probably go about 1 time/month when I start so I don't need to get Tour caliber clubs, just something nice and functional. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you're just starting, you can usually go to your local Sports Authority and ask around there. They have full sets that will have you all ready to go for about $150-$500. I would suggest not getting to cheap with the clubs though...bad things can happen! What is your price range for a set/bag?

Not sure on price range yet. I was thinking about $300-$700.

Best thing to tell you is to buy used set's , calloway sell's used set's very good deal and little usage .When you buy get a set that can be bent ie.. forged , just ask the pro at the store ,once you get some lessons you're swing will start to develope the clubs need to be fitted loft and lie a few degrees either way to square the club at impact. Also buy cavity back not blades too hard to hit {tiger woods hits blades} but almost no one else on tour does you might like the look of ping or titleist ? The main consideration once a quality set has been selected is how it looks to you at address if you like them buy them ! Good luck!

I was just about to bring up the thread I made...thanks for doing it. :)

My first set of clubs were Wilson's we bought used through a local paper. They were great first clubs to learn with.

Good luck with everything, and don't take the game too seriously.

And do take a few lessons. It will be well worth it to begin. Sometimes the local pro will hold group classes for those just starting and it really helps with stance, grip, swing path, body turn etc. When my wife wanted to learn to play a few years ago we went to Sam's and bought her a full set of graphite clubs with a bag and set her up in group lessons. Clubs cost us under $300 but were well suited for her beginning play style.

I had a set made at an independent golf shop for a very reasonable amount and loved them. Proper shaft, grip, swing weight, lie and loft set. It was a very consistent set of clubs. I won a set of Tommy Armour G Force 845 irons several years ago which supposedly were one of the best sets you could buy at the time. I still hit my old custom made ones better and paid much less than what the Tommy Armours would have cost me.

Do not overspend on your first set but get a set good enough to help you out. And definitely perimeter weighted, cavity back irons. They are very forgiving and will amplify your strengths and lessen you weaknesses......

Have loads of fun and know that you will definitely get your moneys worth when you first start by seeing every inch of both sides of the fairway and getting to take a lot of swings..........this is a normal thing.....

    Yes and yes. :)

As a beginner there is no need for expensive clubs. You money would be much better spend on a few lessons to make sure you start learning with the correct grip and swing fundamentals. For some great swing tips, register on www.mytpi.com (it's free) and browse through the videos and articles on there. Most of all, enjoy the game! :)

Thanks for all the help guys! Yeah, I'm already looking at lessons in the area and will be signing up shortly. Maybe I'll just get a cheaper set so when things inevitably go bad I can just blame the equipment?

Go to a golf course or a pro shop. They usually take clubs in on trade so you can get a top brand in great condition for a cheap price. If you can get a name brand set at a cheap price that would be much better then a cheap set. Look in the $200-300 range. Good luck and have fun. Also as a tip don't keep score for the 1st year.

I'd also recommend watching the classified ads in the local paper. You can normally get a better deal by cutting out the middle-man.

Man, I haven't spoken to one person on here or that I know personally who hasn't said something to the effect of "there is no more frustrating game to play". I'm looking forward to the challenge though. Was out at a driving range the past weekend and with their bad club/ball setup was driving between 125-175. Not sure how great that is but for my first time doing it in seriously 5 years, I was fairly happy.
