...because its in the middle of its 30k miles service. I checked in on the car today, but I wondered, while its torn down, is there anything specific I should check on? The heads are off, so can I see if my valve-guides are still up to par? Would it be obvious if they were not? My car is a 1995 with 32k miles. This is the second 30k mi service.

I did see that my catalytic converters look good inside; my headers are good, my fuel rails look good, my water pump spins freely, and my fuel lines were updated. My plug wires on the 1-4 bank were not good and the spark plugs were shot - so that explains an occassional misfire right before the service. I was told that when they drained my radiator fluid, it smelled like a skunk and stunk up the whole shop. What's up with that.

Thanks for weighing in - I figure while the car is in this many pieces, I might as well sort and upgrade everything.

I have seen people add pepper to a cooling system to stop leaks, then when I come along to repair/replace the cooling system I found it smells the same too :p Maybe someone did the same to your cooling system at sometime?

I have even heard people cracking raw eggs into there cooling system too but most common is pepper ;)

Make sure they replace ALL the leads, and not with OEM. At $200 a lead it's a quick way to financial ruin.

The heads are off for the timing belt change?? Is that normal, or were they looking into a valve guide issue??

Since the heads are off, why not get a good port and polish job? At the very least get them port matched.

The condition I saw the engine in was to have the cam covers removed (they are being powder coated) and the cam gear was open underneath. I could see between the cylinder walls and see the lobes of the camshaft. We're doing more work than the standard 30k miles service, but as long as we're in tear down, I wanted to check around. The leads are all being replaced and they are not OEM crap. If the heads were 100% off, what would it look like? I'm mechanical, but not that mechanical.

If the heads were off you would be able to see eight pistons. Then you would be able to see the valves on the bottom of the heads when you turned them over, and in your case 20 on each head, or 5 per cylinder.

There is nothing wrong with the stock, factory oem spark plug wires (other than the outragious price!). They are made from Beru wire, with Beru connectors on each end. But you can order a set of replacements from www.kingsborne.com for $250 or so, and they use the exact same components.

The problem is the enviroment where the wires are situated, all cramped in the valve covers, and it's hot in there!

Man, that is bad; I mean shouldn't a mod pull that? - I'm not sure I'll sleep tonight after seeing that. Even after typing this, the image is burned in my head

sheez, so great therapy PAP - I get it, he didn't torque your lug bolts, instead a pro-active great way to take your mind off what happened to you and onto something far more stressful

this thread should be a handbook for dealing with PTSD - commonwealth style...

as in, you think that's bad, when I were a lad, we ate cold gravel... et al.
