I've read most of the posts on checking engine oil and a few on consumption. Just a personal experience and hopefully some feedback. I did let mine get too low, in fact 3 quarts too low and heard a little ticking in the valves.
What's working for me now is:
    * Drive about a mile at around 3K rpm
    * Get it to 150-170 degrees
    * Fans should have kicked on
    * Check oil while engine is running at idle
It seems the manual is pretty broad and in my case I am hitting on the low end.
    Per the manual regarding consumption:
    .26 -.52 gallons (1 - 2 quarts) every 600 miles. I am going through about 1 quart every 500 miles
This is a 1997 car with 39K miles on it.
How much do you guys think heat (weather), plays into oil consumtion? It seems I burn a bit more the hotter it is.

The temperature should not have any affect at all since the engine has its working temp regardless of the outside temp..I think.
Some engines consume more oil than others. They are not identical twins.........just sisters and brothers all these engines.

interesting, the WSM states to check the oil after getting the temp to 70*c and shutting the engine off.

You should check right after you shut off the engine. Yes, 1 quart in 500 miles is a bit high. What oil are you using?

    I use Mobil 1 Synthetic 15-50.
I may be off a little bit on the miles per quart and it may well be closer to 600 or even 700. My fault for not keeping closer tabs on it, letting it get too low, and not keeping it at the same place on the dipstick. There's a log in the garage now.

I have 45k+ miles on my Feb 1997 production 355 spider. I also am using Mobil 1 15w-50 synthetic. My oil consumption is around 1 quart in 1500 miles. It was higher when I used Mobil 1 0-w-40...maybe 1 quart in 600 to 800 miles.

    Hi,

I've not had to add a quart in 1500 miles on my 348. I use Mobile 1 0-40.

I'm really paranoid of over filling it since the I did just that in late Spring and it wasn't pretty. I check it after it warms up and then again when I'm done driving it and the foam has subsided a bit.

Foam? Are you using the Shell Ultra Helix? I hear that does foam for some reason.

Some oils foam. Don't use them. AEHaas has an excellent article on here somewhere about foam being bad for engine bearing lubrication. He makes a much better case than I can make.

By the way, an overfilled oil sump can foam even very good oil.

Some people may misdiagnose water in the oil (turns the oil milky) as foam, as well.

In general, any and all of the above should be avoided.

I use Shell and I`ve never had to ad any thing. I change oil every 5000km since the car has run 73000km and in (almost ) daily use
Offcourse the level is on min when I change the oil

When I check the level I take the car to 5000r/min for 30sek and stopp and wait 1min before I check the level
