Hi guys, My car doesn't have an A/C. Never had one either. Knowing that the 308 A/C is notoriously inadequate, what would you guys recommend? Get an original 308 A/C (if I can find one in the first place), or figure out how to fit an aftermarket unit (if such a thing exists). Or maybe a mix of those. I don't shy away from fabricating a bracket or two to mount an AC pump or radiator. Any ideas welcome!! Thanks, Hans
Hans, You're in Holland, it ain't that warm is it ; ) Probably quite easy to fit something from a non-electronics system like another 70's/80's car. You'd have to route the coolent pipes - that would be hassle. It seems that many people take the A/C off to race the cars, so I'm sure it would be cheap to find the compressor and controller valves etc. Lee '78 GT4 RHD None functional A/C at the moment - needs a recharge.
i was reading a thread a while ago, i'm not sure where i found it but, they were talking about a upgrade on the interior blower. it seems the oem fan's cfm needs a boost. thought it was a good place to start.
The GT4 uses a different type of blower to the GTB,at least the series 1 cars do.They use the same blower that can be found on the heating fans which are found at the front passenger and drivers side.If you wanted to go aftermarket than possibly an under-dash blower/evaporator assemly on the passenger side unit would be better and cheaper although the whole exercise will be expensive if you dont do the work yourself.A brief list of parts that you will need; 1 x under-dash blower/evaporator assemly (unless you go for genuine although it might be rare to find) 1 x compressor (preferably sanden as it is more efficient) 1 x compressor clutch and pulley (this will more than likely have to be a genuine 308 part) 1 x compressor brackets (this shouln't be to hard to find or even fabricate) 1 x condenser coil (with brackets) 2 x condenser fans 1 x suction hose that stretches from the compressor in the engine bay to the evaporator unit 1 x discharge hose that stretches from the compressor to the condenser at the front 1 x filter drier/receiver 1 x liquid line hose that goes from the condenser to the evaporator 1 x TX valve 1 x HP/LP pressure switch 1 x on/off fan switch 1 x thermostat a few relays and approx. 1kg x R12 or R134a This is a fairly big job even if you were using all genuine parts and if you went the aftermarket option it would be even harder
Look under HOTROD AC SYSTEMS on the web and you'll find different companies that sell components that you may be able to adapt to the car. Granted it will be a interesting and challanging job but you may be able to come up with a better system. Take a look , make some calls and see what you get.
That could be a good idea only thing is in the GT4 there's not much room in the cabin to put something too big that doesn't stand out like dogs balls

Modern Sanden rotary versus old-school York piston will blow colder air. I did this with my 1977 308 GTB USA model. No increased volume, just colder air. You'll need a new drier and expansion valve, compressor oil. I kept mine R12, blows colder.. My .02 Greg

Yeah, Hans...should not it be cool enough in Holland to avoid this big project? In Florida here, it's a big deal and big factor for cars, but where you are, I would reconsider, unless, you really want to have fun LOL!
I have a compressor and mounting brackets from my 83 Mondy Qv. I will let it go cheap as I have no use for it. Its not that pretty and could do with a good clean up, but it worked fine before removal. Only thing is it weighs about 12.5kgs so shipping could be heavy from the Uk. Pm me if interested.
