How many of the 272 GTOs had black seats with red inserts vs. all black seats?
Is it a USA/Euro thing or was it an option?

    I don't think there were any US-market 288 GTOs, so it wasn't a US/Euro issue.

Whoops you are right. But in any case is the approximate number of all black seat GTOs about 25%? Most of the cars I see have the red inserts...

It would seem more than 200 of the GTO's had the solid black seats. One GTO I believe had red leather inserts instead of the cloth. Luigi's GTO was certainly the exception with red inserts, not the norm. The added red on the dash also brightened the interior compared to a standard version interior. One of the Geneva show cars had the red cloth inserts and the 'clearance lump' on the rear deck over the engine.

There was no USA option for the GTO of any kind, being a car that was not homologated for the USA.

According to the production registry, I recall 65 cars that have the red cloth inserts which means 23% of the 279 cars built had them.
    Furthermore:
162 cars were built with the air-conditioning option (58% of the production)
156 cars were built with the power windows option (55% of the production)

Unless you were a true factory VIP client and had something 'extra' like a drop-gear set built into the order, the aforementioned were the only options with the GTO and contrary to what is bandied about, every last one was completed in "Rosso Corsa Fer 300/9" paint.

There you have it off the top of my head!

Actually, if you wish to get technical, all the seats are built with black leather bolster surrounds. The central part of the seats are what are referred to as the 'inserts'. So I suppose you could say that 65 GTOs had seats with the red-and-black inserts.

True, but generally when we refer to 'daytona inserts' it is understood to mean the perforated strips within the center panels of the seats, for example, tan w/black inserts. So, black seats with red center panels with black daytona inserts?

    Joe,
What do you mean by drop-gear set? Also do you know how much it would cost to convert a US-spec back into the (lighter?) Euro-spec?
    Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure why Ferrari called the inserts "red", they were, in my opinion, more orange and didn't look that great.

One the Red paint, Ferrari used multiple tints of Rossa Corsa and used three of them (that we know of) on GTOs. What gets interesting is Ferrari would paint a bunch of panels one tint, the doors another, etc. and then put them on the car. One way you can tell an original GTO paint job is should see different tint of Red from the front to the rear. I never noticed until a Pebble Beach quality painter pointed it out and explained all original GTO paint jobs are that way. Of course, once they pointed it out, it always looks funny. Not to mention all the orange peel on an original paint car.

300/9? I'm not sure why I thought it was 300/5, I'll have to check the plate on my car.

Very astute as always, Steve. The term 'orange' does not really do justice to what Ferrari achieved for the cloth seats. On the original the color changed from light to dark on both the top and bottom of the seat from front to back, when new. Like most materials, it faded all over when exposed to the sun over the years. Some examples appear faded today with a washed out look.

Well, both Joe and I were wrong on the GTO paint code, at least on my GTO. As you can from the sticker, it's Rosso Corsa 300/6.

The inserts have been re-done in leather to a similar pattern to the original.

Huh, good to know... they seemed pretty pristine for a 20-odd year old car...
