550 Brake questions

I have not noticed any squealing on my 550.

According to the 1999 US Manual, the minimum allowed thickness is 3mm. There is no "fresh" thickness specified in the manual, and I've only owned my 550 for a short while, so I can't help you there.

I would have a good over your brake rotor,Remove your wheel and have a look, most information is cast on them ie..minimum disc thickness for machine shops that skim off wear lips from your brake pads. I find most times with squeeking brakes that if I flush the brake caliper with a garden hose it washes away the brake dust, otherwise it could also be just the brand of brake pads you have fitted already

 

3mm, That must be the minimum brake pad thickness allowed

 

3mm rotors would indeed be scary but fantastic for weight reduction!! I think Onno is indeed referring to the pad thickness

Have just been thru the exercise of changing front discs which from recall are 32mm new and min 30mm worn, rears I have a nagging suspicion are slightly thinner but Pap is indeed spot on in that providing there's not too much crud on them, they have the info on the outside edge of the discs themselves.

From my experience my old one's were at around 31mm but had a slight camber so a skim would have taken them close to minimum. This allied to absolutely pathetic braking ability, I put new discs with new Pagid RS29 Yellows on. Difference is night and day, the odd tiny tiny bit of squeal when low pressure braking at slow speed sometimes but quite rare, and they've had a fair bit of abuse now.

Do you know if you have the Fiorano kit on there(?), these use the pagid blue pads and based on others comments these can squeal a bit, although as Pap mentioned, a good wash out etc can often work wonders. Like a lot of pads though it can depend on how they have been broken in and type of use etc, I don't give mine that easy a life but to date haven't really had an squeal issues.

The minimum thickness for the discs should be found printed on the discs themselves, according to the manual.
