Who was the greatest driver stateside, A.J. or Mario ? Looking forward to the hearing the american perspective on these great racers.
Mario by far. Multidimensional. WDC. One of the greatest racers of all time and certainly one of the best American racers.
I prefer Mario who is almost never mentioned when the "all time best in F1" subject comes up. But should be considered. Always a competitor no matter what he drove. Indy, stocks, sprint, F1. Lotus happened to have the best car durring his time in F1 but I believe he would have benn a contender in any top car.
Mario drove for Ferrari with Jacky Iccx, never did all that well but then Iccx was a better driver and he didn't do too well either. Mario for me but Foyt was very good as well
Here's AJ a couple of weeks ago. Overall I'd say Mario. The stories of AJ and Gurney winning LeMans in the GT40 are great. Oddball teammates. Image Unavailable, Please Login
Don't ever compare Mario with that scumbag Foyt, Mario is a gentleman Foyt is just a disgusting human being that walks around thinking the world revolves around him. He is a true embarrassment to the sport and should have been banished from all forms of racing a long time ago.
I won't forget when he punched Arie Luyendyk in face when he Foyt THOUGHT he won the race and when Luyendyk went over to explain what had happened that he had won Foyt just sucker punched him in the face…….that right there showed Foyt for what he is. p.s. That photo Michael posted of Foyt makes me want to vomit or better yet it helps me when I'm constipated.
Frank, I am not much of an AJ fan, actually I think he is a Fat Blow Hard, but actually he punched Arie in the back of the head.
Thats what I meant see how pissed I am just seeing or hearing of this guy........he sucker punched him.
No contest! Why even ask the question? I believe Mario Andretti to be one of the greatest drivers ever, let alone in the United States. I would probably have said that he was *the* greatest, but that would probably have to be Steve McQueen
I don't think Arie's the only one he ever took a swing at and I'm glad my photo had an impact on you. I think.
The people at Indy liked Foyt, and he got away with quite a bit of stuff. That isn't to say he wasn't a decent driver, he certainly was, but nowheres near as good as Mario. However, Mario, good as a was, wasn't anywhere as good as Phil Hill, nor Dan Gurney. I've had the good fortune to meet them, and to watch them, and in my book Gurney was the best. Met Gurney at Riverside, where the AMA had attempted to disqualify myself and Doug Daniels because we'd switched positions on the sidecar during the race. We knew it was legal, but a bit unsafe (did it on the back straight, seemed ok at the time). Gurney's comment was that he wanted to meet us, since he'd never seen that move before. Had a couple of actors (Jim Garner & the midget that played Barretta) with him at the time (it was in the early 80s). Art
I was thinking the samething, especially the scene from Bullitt. Art that is a great story about the sidecar.
I don't think he drove in Bullitt. He did do the stuff in The Great Escape. I surprised no one has corrected me on LeMans. He actually drove in the real race for about 2 hrs. about the time the movie was made. Ever see Any Given Sunday. That was made by Malcolm Smith with the help of McQueen. I was at the Sky Ranch in the early 80's. Cool stuff. Art can correct me as needed.
