No, Home Depot or Orchard Hardware only had sheets that were 22ga thick. This is very hard to roll. I got mine from a scrap metal outfit - these are the best places. You go there and ask for 26ga Stainless Steel sheet and give them the dimension and number of pieces. They will cut it for you to exact size and charge you only by weight. You could actually have them cut it to 5" X 3-1/2" rectangle pieces (4 each) and even have them rolled in their hand roller machine (looks like a dough baker's roller) and you will end up with 4 curved pieces. Then you can just adjust them to smaller diameter at home. I had my pieces cut larger and simply trimmed to size with tinner's snips at home. HTH.
As the author of the Banshee post I can tell you that I and Ferrari of New England spent a considerable amount of time trying to identify the source of the chirping sound. The thing that got us was the fact that it didnt chirp unless the car was being driven. I guess it had something to do with the lower pressure in the area of the exhaust with the car in motion. Laminar flow or something like that. Any ways, they sold me a set for my Mondial and they really worked. I strongly recommend them. I just wish I had known about these inserts a year ago when I bought the car.
Yeeehaww. Thank you oh wise ones of Ferrarichat. My 308 has sounded like a VW Bug for *10 years*. I first thought it was a bad valve (because I did have one 10 years ago) but that got fixed 10 years ago and still had the chirp. Took off the exhaust and cats and still heard the chrip so I figured it wasn't the tips so I just dealt with it for 9 years. Then I saw the post on air injector plugs http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=131252&highlight=injector and that helped, but still didn't get rid of it. So, back to this thread and $10 in steel + 30 minutes of sweat and now.... No chirp. Thank you all. Should have tried this eons ago. By the way, my 308 exhaust uses 4" inner circumerence tips, not 5" as is mentioned for the 328 this thread was written for. Right now, they are crummy inserts because I could only get zinc coated 26 ga at Home Depot and the local steel supply place doesn't carry 26 gauge stainless (though they would have been happy to order it for me for only $150). So, once I find a local source for 26 gauge stainless and some 4" circumference pipe to wrap them around, I should be sitting pretty & chirp free. I'll post before and after audio for those of you who have never had the pleasure of sounding like a VW bus.
Switch to ss as soon as possible. My experience with plain galvanized sheet steel is that as soon as it gets good and hot, it will curl a bit tighter and blow out. Stainless steel has enough "spring" in it to stay put.
Oh, and be sure to push them in far enough that they are behind the "lip" formed where the end of the perforations stop. That edge or lip helps retain them.
not sure but it's easy to check. The diameter of the inside of my tips was 1.25 inches. Measure your inner diameter and multiply by pi (3.14).
I realized the "after" isn't terribly interesting but here's the "before" in case you've never heard what a case of the chirps sounds like. It's most prominent at heavy throttle from around 2000 RPM up to around 4000 RPM. Also, couldn't get 26 gauge locally so I bought some 24 gauge and will install it tomorrow. I was in the same boat as Tillman. I didn't have any idea what you guys were talking about. Unless I just don't notice it, my car (328) doesn't make that noise. Nice solution! Gene
Hahaha, it does sound like a stock air-cooled VW Bug! I love the deep smooth sound of the Ferrari, though
I always thought my MOndial sounded like a VW, standing beside it at idle, even the engine noise or maybe the combination with the chirp. I knew I saved that stainless for a reason. I'm going to the garage right now!
This tread is great. I have had whistle/squeal/chirp since I got the car and have been very annoyed. I tried this with some sheet aluminum from the hardware store and it worked perfectly. The noise was gone, but as stated previously, the aluminum curled up and two of them came out while driving. Now that I confirmed it was the exhaust, I ordered an X-ost Maranello muffler. I know the thread is old, but thanks to Gatsby and Fchat for wonderful info as usual. Brian Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login

2021 update: 2 sheets of K&S .018 stainless steel sheet ($7.99 each @ Ace Hardware) did the trick for mine. Cut to 3 1/8” x 4 1/16”, rolled around a floor jack handle, drove in to the tail pipes with a socket and wood block. Worked like a charm, chirping noise is gone.
