Hi there, anyone live in Cape Coral? I am thinking about moving to this area. My main concern is hurricanes and the local economy. I am thinking about opening a waterfront restaurant in the area. Any thoughts on this?

I have been dealing with Cape Coral from 1994 to 2004 on a daily basis. Cape Coral is a sleepy town but has grown quite rapidly in the past.
There are many German tourists that own property in the town. You will find one of the biggest Oktoberfest's in CC.
Remember that CC does not have its own beach (the 5 yard strip they call Beach is a man made beach)
All depends on what you do if CC is the right place. Ft Myers Beach is very nice, Bonita Springs Beach is nice. Further north you have Sarasota Beach.
In general the west coast is a little more "retiree".

Cape Coral is really just a sleepy little enclave of Fort Myers. It's all man made (built on fill) and as mentioned doesn't really have it's own Beach. Almost all the homes are on channels from which you can access the Gulf if you are into boating.

South Fort Myers, Bonita Springs down to Naples is much more happening, etc.

A few years back the Fort Myers area was the fastest growing area in the nation. Slowed a little since then, but still pretty good.

It's very rare that Huricanes will hit that area. Obviously Charlie did a few years back, but overall it had been something like 50 years since a direct hit.

We've got a little place on Sanibel. You'll need to do some work to find a nice quiet area to live, but they are out there.

    Good luck.

I happen to be Living there now....And I have seen a "Waterfront Restaurant" for sale in the area. I've eaten there many years ago, so i cant tell you the condition of the building. But it is on the River, and seemed to do good business when it was open. There is also a LOT of high rises going up within barely more than 2 miles of it. Ill get the contact info for you if you would like.

Great, yeah, if you could get some info on it and relay it to me, great. Is it in town somewhere? When you say river...I wasn't aware that there was a fresh water river coming through there. Interesting. If you could snap a cell phone pic too, that would be great.

you may want to check Cape Coral's location.
It is on one side on the river and on the other inbetween Sanibel Island and the Ocean. Problem is that Sanibel shields CC from the Ocean and hence the coast towards Sanibel is Mangroves which are protected and as such cannot be used or cut through or ....you get my point. So the River is all the water you have.
To say the canals lead to the ocean is incorrect. Almost all canals there do not lead anywhere. They are dredging canals and end at a point where a step is built in. The immediate canals to the east and south of CC are Ocean accessable. Those that have fixed bridges are usually under 8ft and still cost a good penny and those that have open access with no fixed bridges are very expensive.

As for the restaurant, make sure you understand your demographics. VERY important. Before you buy a place come and see it, live it and see the people that will be your customers.

If you want to have a good real estate agent out there call Ken and Viki of All Cape Realty. Their phone is 239-542-1222. I have been doing business with them for 10 years and can only say absolute top notch in over 400 real estate transactions. Tell them Martin from ICT in Miami sent you. They will work FOR you and know the Cape for many many years.

Wow, leave it to the press to twist some things. First off you only recive a citation if the grass in your yard is longer than 18 inches. Second, there is some houses for sale, but not "every other house", I know of 2 within 4 blocks of me. Third, there are fresh water and brackish/salt water canals and if you live on a canal that has access to one of the boat locks/lifts, the city gives you a key to it. Fourth, ok the bridges are rather low, but the gulf access ones seem to be high enough for a small pleasure sailboat. Each Publix employs 100-150 persons, I could get the actually numbers from my uncle (a district manager for Publix) if you wanted. And I believe there to be 6 stores open at the moment and 2 more that are nearing completion.

Oh and the property in question is in North Forth Myers, north side of the river and west of US41 on Hancock Bridge Parkway.

It was dark when I went out last night so I didn't even see the sale signs when I went by. I might have time today to go run by there and take a look.

I think if you use the Thesaurus for "Cape Coral, Florida", the alternatives are:

    *Boring
    *F'n Boring
    *Amazingly F'n Boring
*Go scream at the top of your lungs because it's so amazingly F'n Boring.
*Take a bottle of sleeping pills, then go scream at the top of your lungs because it's so amazingly F'n Boring.

Well Fred is right. It is kinda boring, its either eat, drink, or procreate. And then theres the car scene, the group I hang out with is quite a bit younger than most of you all. But most of us can drink and get into the nightclubs.

I went by the place today and took some pictures...ok ALOT of pictures (I am a photographer), I will have them up for you to view tomorrow.

There seems to be 3 bars/restaurants that are there for you to pick from. I took photos of them all from the outside.

The phrase "Newly wed and nearly dead" gets tossed around. As does "Gods waiting room"

Really isnt that bad here, just a slower pace of life.

    Definition of Cape Coral:

Land of the newly weds and the nearly deads.

Andreas may be interested in selling the Green Flash on Captiva. If you check the prices of waterfront properties they are near and dear.

Cape Coral has a very large population of vacationing Germans.
