I am going to visit New York with friends in September. We are thinking of renting an apartment for us for 2 nights. Preferably MidTown or closer to downtown. Anybody got any suggestions? My friends are not wealthy, so something fairly affordable (not a rathole though) maybe 100-200 bucks a night.

    Thanks

    Niko

For that much money you might want to just get a hotel. Why not try and find a hotel with a little kitchenette or something. If you are really going for the apartment def try craigslist.

I checked hotels and they are fairly expensive since we will have to take two rooms and I don't want to live far from my friends.

    Youth Hostel.

This NYC, not some 3rd world rathole -- 100 to 200 might get a homeless dude to fart on you, but it won't get you a roof over your head.

If hotels are 400USD a night, I am sure their will be something for 250-300 per night. Or I can stay in Manhattan and my friends out of town. How bad is the commute on week-ends?

try getting a hotel in secaucus, NJ. Its close and cheap. Also public transport to the city is easy. Hoboken is your other option.
