I seem to have gotten a number of programs that autoload when I boot or reboot WinXP (SP2) which means that it takes for ever to load. Any good suggestions of tactics to use or websites to visit to get rid of all non-essential autoloads?

I can't even seem to be able to check to see which programs are on autoload. I know that Picasso (a picture management program) and Realtime (for music that I NEVER use) are both autoloaded. I also have Weathertap on autoload (a program that keeps the current temp on the task bar). If these all need to be deleted from autoload, I just need some instructions on how to do that.

    TIA

Many programs will disable autoloading if you go to their options/configuration menus and find the appropriate setting to disable.

If you're not using a program and it won't disable through some options menu, go to the "Add Programs" app (typical Microsoft anti-intuitive naming, like going through Start to Shutdown) in Control Panel, select each app you don't use and uninstall them.

You may also want to defragment your disk if you haven't done that in a long time or never done it. To do that, find the disk drive icon in My Computer, right click to open Properties, find Tools, then Defragment.

P.S. Slow operations might also be due to virus or spy programs running on your computer without your knowledge. Be sure to have anti-virus and anti-spy programs scan the system now and then.

Thanks. I run Disk Clean and Defrag at least once a week. And, I keep my antivirus and antispam very current - at least once a week. I think it's just all of the programs that autoload on start up. If I want to keep the programs but NOT have them autoload, how to I do that?

If you've checked the other things, then the first suggestion is to find each program's config/options menu and see if they allow disabling autoloading directly.

Some programs allow you to block programs from starting up (ie: Zone alarm, Tune up utilities 2007, etc.) Its the best thing that I have done to my computer and since then it has started up 1.5x faster.

I am running Zone Alarm Security Suite but I just checked and I could not find how to block programs from running during start up. The Help index included nothing on the topic.

Suggestions would be appreciated. I have removed one program completely and blocked another from running at start up (picasso).

Run it and PM me the logfile it generates, I'll look at it and let you know what to disable.

I'll try attaching my startup list to this so that all of the world can see. I doubt that there are any security issues to someone seeing my startup list.

Did I send the wrong thing (suggesting that I'm not that computer literate)?

I tried to attach the text file of my start up list but fchat will not allow a file that big.

I'll e-mail it directly to you if that would help.

Or you can go straight to the source and delete the registry entries for the apps that run on startup. What you see below are the ones that I choose to keep.

Unplug from your modem/router, and see how quick it boots.

Look for a program called "BootVis.exe". It is a utility to increase boot speed. Google it, it's everywhere. After installing the program, run it and click TRACE and then OPTIMIZE SYSTEM. Computer will reboot and the program will start itself back up after the reboot and do some hocus pocus. It works well for me.

Ed, When I had Zone Alarm Anti Virus It had a tab called "Program Control". I will try to get a screen shot and show you what I mean.
