Hey all; A good friend of mine turns 50 in about a week and his wife wants to get him a car gift. (Yeah, she's a great lady) She says he loves the 911 targa from the '85 to '90? model range. Any info, recommendations, cars for sale, etc would be a big help. I'd like to help get him his car but have no idea what is important to look for or what questions to ask. Any thoughts?

They think if I know Ferraris that I know about all cars and I hate to reveal my ignorance! Thanks for any help.

Just an observation, but there were VERY few targa turbos made - I wish your friend luck finding one for sale.

+1 I never liked the targa version; I think the roof line doesn't look as good. Very few people seemed to like them as well as they indeed didn't sell too many. You'll be able to find a cabriolet much easier, but they'll fetch a higher price.

Go to http://forums.rennlist.com and then to the TURBO/ 911 TURBO section. You'll be able to find all the info on the cars you need and plenty of nice knowledgeable people.

KDS on the board here can help you find one and Cajun and I believe FerrariPete are both 930 owners.

    Good luck!

Do you have a price range? The slant-nose cab turbo is a well respected car, if it is a factory model. The RUF version of this is probably the ultimate in the year range.

You could also go the "turbo look" route, which gives you the wider flares, wings, brakes etc, without the turbo maintainence costs. It's also pretty rare, but there's always one of just about everything in the porsche club classifieds.

This car is at Fantasy Junction. Sloan cars gets some nice P cars; that guy in Texas at RPM usually has the choicest 993 and earlier P cars, but he gets top dollar. I was never a slantnose fan, nor a Targa fan.
The older Turbo cars are pretty neat, but the RUFs are the ticket, though.

Same goes for me, but I have a hard time faulting the looks of that black slantnose you posted!

Not many know it these days, but Alois Ruf was very much against chopping the noses on his cars as well. Eventually he gave in to market pressure though.
