it seems that the exclusive deal between apple and at&t may be in jeopardy! a young college freshman (RIT) has hacked the iphone to the extent that he is able to make it work for any provider...not just at&t.

i don't know more about it at this point however, should this pass muster at the legal level, it would seem steve jobs may be able to enjoy all the benes of an "initial exclusive" relationship w/ at&t as well as a new pop if this will actually provide others the opportunity to ues the i-phone on their platforms!

does anyone have any more info?

If true, I hope Cingular/ATT didn't invest any money into the iPhone...

I believe the only other US carrier to support it is T-Mobile.

To get (supposed) exclusive rights to the hottest cell phone in history? I'm sure AT&T invested plenty.

With the time and desire, anything can be hacked, cracked or reverse engineered to work in a way that it wasn't intended. It is even easier when it is a device that will be doing the same kind of function, the same way, and you just need to connect it to a different service.

The problem with this particular hack, it isn't click-and-go friendly, which is what most people would like. The hack is too involved for most at this time. Soon, that wil change, once shortcuts are put into place. But even so, apple isn't in trouble, only AT&T is. Apple will sell more phones since others will not need to wait out another year to rid themselves of a 2-year contract to get an iphone with an AT&T contract.

Yes indeed. I used to solder items like that years ago when I did time at Texas Instruments.

Your skills in the force are stronger than mine!
True, but at the same time, what other GSM carriers exist (and with EDGE data)? T-mobile? Not Sprint/Nextel, not Verizon...

Cell phones aren't allowed to be locked in the UK so they all come unlocked. Just buy a UK phone and put in your SIM card. Ready to go. Btw my friend has an AT&T 8525 (different phone, of course) and had it unlocked. My T-mobile SIM card worked well in it. :)

The iPhone doesn't accept SIM cards (as told by their Web site & salespeople).

If they told you it had a SIM card, people would think of ways not to sign with AT&T so the salespeople never get commission. :)

My wife has spent the last two weeks shopping for a new cell phone. Her experience has shown me that most sales people at AT&T, Sprint and Alltel are completely clueless. The scariest part is that NONE of them know that they're clueless and spout out so much garbage like it's cold hard fact. She'd even get totally different answers to questions at the exact same store from different people (all of them self-proclaimed "experts").

Funny, reminds me of a joke, usually applied to computer salesmen, but could be applied to cell phone salesmen as well:

    Q. What's the difference between a car salesman and a cell phone salesman?

    A. The car salesman knows when he is lying to you.

By the way - look here for a way to hack the iphone that does not require a soldering iron. What are the odds that two separate hacks came out the same day?!

    http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/24/iphone-unlocked-atandt-loses-iphone-exclusivity-august-24-2007/

I should also point out that there is a whole cell phone market outside of the US that could benefit from these unlock hacks - it's not about using T-Mobile...

Cool, the iPhone uses Intel microprocessors
( the little "i" on the chip is manufacture designation for Intel)

It uses a single Intel wireless flash device. The main CPU is a Samsung ARM based processor.
