I was reading an article today about a guy who set the record for having the highest speed ever recorded in Britain for a traffic violation. A cool 172mph :)

But what was even more interesting to me was the last line of the article:

"In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was caught doing 156mph in his 3.2-litre BMW M3 in Scotland. He was jailed for five months. "

    Thats right folks, five months!!!

It is funny how Lindsay Lohan drove drunk twice in only four months but was able to only be relegated to a 1-day stint behind bars. Amazing!

It's sad when you spend more time in jail for speeding than drunk driving of thievery.

172 is the fastest in England. I've heard of Americans getting nailed at 200+.

Wasn't there a news story a few years back about a guy from Texas doing 235+ mph. in his Koenigsegg?? Correct me if I'm wrong.

Here's the article. A Porsche 911 Turbo no less.

    "Motorist admits speeding at 172mph
    Aug 24 01:54 PM US/Eastern

A motorist has pleaded guilty to driving at 172mph on a rural A-road, making him the fastest speeder ever caught in Britain.

Tim Brady, 33, was caught in a random speed check on the A420 near Abingdon, Oxfordshire, driving a 98,000 3.6-litre Porsche 911 Turbo in January this year.

The current highest speed to result in a conviction is 156mph.

In a short appearance at Oxford Crown Court, Brady pleaded guilty to one count of dangerous driving.

His plea of not guilty to one count of aggravated vehicle-taking was accepted by the Crown Prosecution Service and he will be sentenced next month.

Brady, of Harrow, north-west London, resigned from his job at car lease firm Helphire at its Abingdon branch days after police stopped him in the car.

A spokeswoman for road safety charity Brake branded his actions "selfish".

"The idea of someone driving at that speed is horrific. The chances that a person will be able to control a vehicle at that speed if something unexpected happens is slim.

"It is extremely selfish. Nobody has the right to put other people's lives at risk like that."

In 2003, car dealer Jason McAllister was caught doing 156mph in his 3.2-litre BMW M3 in Scotland. He was jailed for five months."

    Unbelievably stupid comment
Gosh, I hate those clueless people.

Germany has no general speed limit and the autobahn is still a lot safer then British motorways (according to accident statistics).

Besides, driving 172 mph in a TT is a piece of cake, which of course she doesn't know!!

How can you justify sending someone to jail for five months for something that is completely legal in a neighbour country???

    LOL, what about Singapore? :D

I guess the better question is that if he knew the penalties were very severe why didn't he just go to that neighboring country and do it?

Her comments don't sound too out of line to me. If he had of wrecked and killed(which happens all too frequently) you could add "killer" to the "selfish" remarks. Just like anything else, you need to exercise some control in an environment that could seriously impact others. I'm not exactly sure what a rural A-road looks like but I'm sure it's not the Autobahn. A controlled environment is a whole other story.

Yes, it might be - but she said "should something unexpected happen". And SHOULD smth unexpected happen 172 is a very high speed to be travelling at.

True, but it does work on German streets very well most of the time, doesn't it?

Look, I am not talking about driving the crap out of your car all the time but merely when it is reasonable to do so, i.e. little traffic, good vision, good car...

An example: there was a speed limit on the autobahn close to Münster until one guy sued the state because of this, claiming there was no high probability of accidents on this very route. He and his lawyer won the case and guess what happened: there are fewer accidents now than before.
Reason: People are more concentrated on driving because they know they have to be.

I agree, my comment was just on your attack on what she said - as it did hold a valid point.

Also, from what I heard, 80% of Germany's autobahns ARE actually limited. If I'm not mistaken the "no limit" parts are labeled by 130 in a blue square right (which is to be interpreted as a suggested speed)? Having done quite a lot of traveling in Germany lately I can say there's not so many of these areas and quite a lot where there is in fact a limit, denoted by the all familiar signs. Usually in the 100-130 region.

I just looked it up, somewhat less than 40% of the autobahns have a speed limit. Unfortunately, my friend, this number is steadily increasing and the government will most likely introduce a general speed limit within the next three years :(:(:(.

    But until then... :D:D:D

That man deserves a prize, not a ticket. I don't understand why he would stop, if he kept going full speed in 15 seconds he would be a 3/4 mile away from the cop. BTW its hard for some people to not hit each going 60, let alone 4x that.

That person is by far one of the stupidest people ever, and deserves to get run over by his car. Not only did he endanger himself, he endangered others. Smooth move idiot.

The guy bought the Beetle so he could drive back to his car. He took the oil cap off because it was the only one that would fit on his car (the cops removed the original when it was impounded). He then left the brand new beetle on the side of the road unlocked with the keys in it
