Lewis Hamilton has hit back at teammate Fernando Alonso's claim that he is personally responsible for much of McLaren's step forward in 2007.

Spaniard Alonso, already at loggerheads with his British teammate and boss Ron Dennis, told reporters in Turkey that he had felt nothing "given back to me" despite delivering up to six tenths of a second per lap of performance to the MP4-22.

And while championship leader Hamilton confessed that the reigning World Champion had contributed to the team "hugely" this year, he suggests that Alonso's comments fail to recognise the contribution of McLaren's 1000-strong staff.

"It's a lot of people, so if he's found six tenths, then what have they found?" the Briton wondered to ITV. "It's really through their work."

Hamilton acknowledged a good driver's contribution to a team's performance but said no individual can take all the credit.

    "You know...
they make improvements, we test them out, so it's really a team thing; it's not one individual that's found all that time."

While playing down Alonso's comments, meanwhile, McLaren's F1 CEO Martin Whitmarsh surmised that the quotes might have been motivated by the Spaniard's competitive streak.

"I think Fernando is immensely competitive and looking for an advantage," he said. "He's certainly bringing a lot –- he's a great, great driver."

How much extra a lap is Michael Schumacher worth?

He was at least half a second faster than any of his teammates. so clearly a top driver adds value to the team. Furthermore Alonso is known to be an excellent development driver, something Kimi has never been accused of. To think that Alonso has not contributed to the car's performance is absurd.

Re read, no one said he has not contributed, the point is he did contribute, no more or no less than all the other people working in that team to win. A driver is a very important component of a winning team, it is the one's that think "I" did it that chaps the people who work with them so "they" can do it. Aparently Hamiliton works and gives credit to others. Alonso does not appear to do that so much.

Funny to see how Dennis is losing control of his drivers. Good thing.

I so hope Unfairnando leaves for Renault.

Interesting move by Hamilton, bashing Alonso and pulling the team on his side. We're getting a little Machiavelli here...

IMO had Alonso Known what he Knows now, ie how good Hamilton really is he wouldnt have joined Mclaren.
In fact I dont think anyone could have foreseen it including RD.
This being the case FA has shot himself in the foot developing the car for his faster team mate.
But where does the value of a driver lie in his skill to develop a car or just be a Kimi ..fast
I believe Hamilton will learn the skill to develop cars..
I did want FA in a ferrari for that reason driver feedback) I have since changed my mind..I hasten to add.
I think FA will leave Mc and demand to be No1 driver for a team that will pamper the spoilt sod.

It's a bit of a mood point thereafter:

Had Alonso known, that Renault isn't calling it quits, he would have never left them. Hamilton or no Hamilton.

There's not much love lost between Lewis and 2xWDC Alonshole. That's a good thing for SF in the short and longer term.

Dennis the Menace started the season with arguably the two best drivers and the best car. Then McClarengate hit which was compounded by the qualifying debacle. The team has unraveled. One has to look a management as a leading cause of this demise. The person ultimately responsible for management is RD. Couldn't happen to a nicer bunch of guys. ;)

As usual I agree in hindsight, like Button paying his own money to stay with Honda hell who have thought they could be so bad this season..

I do think though that Ferrari and Mclaren should bite the bullet and now get behind one of there drivers for the final push.
I dont like it that way but as its a 4 horse race ferrari need to close the gap by ever legal means as poss.

Ferrari can't pick a driver because either of them has shown weaknesses this season. I think Kimi stands the better chance, but I wouldn't bet the farm on it.

On the McLaren side it looks a bit clearer: They should make Hami #1, but of course that would never fly with Unfairnando. So they might as well have no team orders.

I hope that team is Renault and then we can see how much of a development driver he really is.

Yes I would choose Kimi it would be unfair though Massa has done a great job would be ashame to put him in a blocking role.
but this maybe the only way. They could toss for it a coin that is :)

I think we saw in Turkey how team orders within Ferrari work: Kimi wasn't allowed to attack. Not because he was #2, but because they don't want to risk the cars.

Not sure the blocking role would actually work or yield much. At least not on the upcoming tracks. But given the go ahead to pass and make room, that would definitely help.

Are you sure that it was possible to get around? Alonso was stuck behind Heidfeld for a while, and had to wait for the pit rotation to get past him.

With the points race this close its too early to see who gets to block for whom. Oh thats right, it doesnt happen any more since the rules against team orders.
    But if so...
The role will probably be decided after one or the other drivers luck runs out; flat tire or other DNF.
Kimi's record here is not exactly stellar.

If you compare the two records, there is very little difference this season:

Massa had one DNF vs Kimi's two.
