Any one got any idea why "red" brake calipers were are synonimous with performace? Ferrari produce calipers in Red and Yellow but red seems to be the more popular

So gents we can assume from the above that no one knows why Ferrari or whoever it was who originally painted their calipers red chose red. Lambo's are black as are their rocker covers.

The yellow car looks stunning but the red calipers are less obvious than 10 meters square of bright yellow paint. My car is Tour de France blue the calipers are red, the funny thing is you notice the yellow wing badges first because they stand out so well against all that blue paint.

I'll venture out here, risking life and limb to suggest that Porsche's "upgrade" calipers known as "Big Reds" on "S" equipped and turbo cars began this as a way to help viewers of similarly-bodied cars "see" these particular upgrades. Porsche, sometimes having 4 nearly identical appearing variants though with significant option/price distinctions has nearly mastered this genre of subtle differentiation.

Thus, red calipers on the late 964 series cars and 993s (probably even before that in their performance catalogs) helped ignite the trend.

I am currently on a remote assignment, here for the next couple of weeks with nothing to do but work. At least I have the NET slow as it is so as i have my Anorak with me I may just put it on and see what comes of trawling hyper-space for some more background

You may be right it could have been Porsche.

Just out of interest what finish did Ferrari put on their calipers before they painted them red or yellow. I worked for Rolls Royce in a previous life and they finished theirs in Black enamel. Lambo's are black mass produced standard units are plated and chromated hence the gold tint.

Maybe I'll shoot an email to Brembo

Yup.. you are correct.. it was Porsche who started the whole red caliper thing. Started just after they offered the big Brembo brakes on the 928S4.. (in black).. then they offered the red option as A Hudson suggested in his post.

Mine were painted and they look fine to me... Actually everyone seems to like them pretty much, even in a yellow car.

    Tips:

1.- Cover everything else before painting (even ruber caps).

2.- Use a white color base, specially if the originals are dark.

3.- Pick a red that stands out (We mixed a red base with a little bit of an orangie red and a tiny bit of white - your paintor should know). This is due to rim shadow. We recently painted calippers for a friend´s porche and they looked great with out wheels, and then they totally changed when everything was back on...way dark.

4.- Some people are against using stickers for the logo, due to heat. Our solution was quite simple. After three hands of red (dry paint ofcourse) we placed clear stickers (white letters) and then put three hands of good quality CLEAR on top of the whole thing. We had tried it on the porsche, have them for months and the clear protection sure makes the difference, no peeling off with heat or water.

    That´s it, good luck.

I have a set of black calipers out being powder coated red right now and was wondering what color to use on the lettering..white or black. Many tell me black but the white seems to look great...What do you guys think?

Did you obtain that level of quality painting the calipers whilst on the car? If the answer is yet then I tip my hat to you, looks truly excellent. Where did you get the stickers?

Yes the white lettering looks good. Anyone have a good pic with the black lettering on the red caliper for comparison? By the way I have stencils being made for the 355 calipers. I can get a sheet of 10 for $50.00. They are peel and stick so you can spray your own color on with high temp paint. They are about 10.5 cm by 1.4 cm. same as orginals. pm me if interested.
PS if you only want 5 then Im sure that would work out too. Also if there are many who want them then Im sure I might get a better price.

You missed my question, "Did you paint your calipers in situ?" I assume you did as you say to cover everything first. Quality looks excellent.

The calipers pictured above are not mine. Mine are going to be ready soon. They are being stripped and powerder coated red. Then they will be rebuilt seals and all ect ect. Then I will apply the stencils and paint the "FERRARI" back on them. I must say that the yellow lettering looks good too. It will be white, black or yellow lettering....havnt made up my mind yet.

Well I got my Calipers back powder coated and rebuilt. I went with the white lettering and it looks great. Placing the stencils in the exact spot takes some good eyes (or 2 pairs of reading glasses. Here is a pick after I used the high temp white paint to fill in the stencils. You will notice that the stenciling on the left calipers looks upside down. They are the passenger side calipers and before the 430s came out Ferrari or Brembo were too lazy I guess to turn the calipers around so that the F in Ferrari starts at the top of the caliper on both sides of the car when in place on the hubs. As it stands right now the factory calipers have the writing upside down on the passenger side of most if not all cars before the 430.
