    Hello Everyone,

It's official...the first installment of the TX Exotic/German Auto Enthusiasts airstrip meet-n-greet will be held on September 9th. The event will be an all day affair from 9 am - 4 pm at a North TX (just north of DFW) closed airstrip.

To attend and participate in the event please RSVP by sending me the following information (email address below):

    Name:
Forum affiliation (mbworld, m5board, 6speedonline, ferrarichat):
    Forum screen name:
    email address:
    Car (make/model/year):
Mods (basic info, don't need anything top secret):
    City & State:
    Phone (optional):

I will forward physical address and other information for the airstrip through email. We will need anyone attending to RSVP to me so we can get a clear attendee count. I probably won't publish the specific location on the forums simply to discourage people from spontaneously showing up. Everyone is welcome to attend if they will just RSVP with me so I can plan ahead for all the necessary items (parking, food, portable bathroom count, controlled gate access, etc.).

If you'll be traveling in from out of town/state I will be more than happy to help you find lodging and also host you the night before so we can introduce ourselves and have some great laughs.

There are a few specifics regarding the closed runway you should be aware of before you decide to come:

    1. We have approximately 4,000 feet to use
    2. The runs will be 1/2 mile in length (2,640 feet)
    3. The remaining distance will be used for braking and turn around
    4. Two cars will run against each other
    5. We can do standing starts and rolling starts (hope this will satisfy everyone)
    6. The runway is not pristine and there are bumps. If you run very low profile tires I would probably swap them for taller rubber or not take the chance. Just my opinion, better safe then sorry. We took a M5 and M3 on the runway earlier and performed several high-speed (135+ mph) and low-speed runs. The M5 has 35 series rubber on the back and it was totally fine. The M3 has 30 series rubber and it was a little harsher of a ride, but still acceptable. I just want to paint a conservative picture so you know what to expect. For many of us, these cars are our pride and joy and I'd hate for someone to be upset with me for not giving them a clear picture of what to expect.

The event will be a great time for all and we'll have multiple video cameras covering the runs and the event. This will be a family event so your spouse, girlfriend/boyfriend, and children are welcome as well (please don't bring your wife and girlfriend, choose one or the other so we can keep the drama down).

To RSVP please contact me with the above information at [email protected].

I look foward to meeting many of you for the first time on September 9th.

    Thank you,

    Darren

I'm sorry, but who are you? Is there an organization backing this? Insurance? Crash/fire crews? Entry costs?

Sounds interesting, but more info is needed.

    Tillman,

No worries. I am the individual coordinator of the event. The event is not associated with any company and was originally created as a German auto car shoot-out and meet-n-greet targeting BMW ///M, Mercedes ///AMG, and Porsches. I just received a registration from a FerrariChat member and someone suggested I open the event to others on this forum.

The event can only be attended via RSVP and it's not open to the public, nor will I publicize the location to limit spontaneous attendees and to ensure the cars attending stay true to the theme of the event (unique, exotic, or German).

Regarding your additional questions, we'll have access to the airport fire response team and the cost, if any, will be determined later this week. Since it's an all day event and food/drinks will be catered I'm anticipating the cost shouldn't be more than $20-$30 per person. It could be less, but I need to get a final cost from the caterer and the videographer/film editor. Each attendee will get a copy of the filmed event as well.

I hope this answers your initial questions. Feel free to reach out to me directly via email or post them here. If you'd like to attend please be sure to send me an email with the information requested in the initial post of this thread.

    Regards,

    Darren

Sounds fun and a lot closer than Goliad for the Texas Mile.

Are you going to have starting lights or just a starter person?

    Steve,

Someone else asked if I would be supplying a tree light as well. I may have access to one, but I was not planning on it since they are not timed runs (will use a person or rolling start with a starting marker for those that prefer). This will be more informal than the Texas Mile and lower speed since we won't have an entire mile to run.

We'd enjoy having you there. Send me an email if interested with your RSVP.

    Hope this helps.

    Regards,

    Darren

That's an unfortunate article and very different than our scenario, but I can appreciate the concern. The article referenced in the link is specific to a motorcyclist trying to do a high-speed run on an airstrip at 11 pm at night. Not really even close to the scenario we've organized with only cars running during the day with clearly identified lanes in a controlled manner.

    Cheers,

    Darren

    Hello Everyone,

Due to the weather I have moved the event back one week and will now hold the event on Saturday, September 15th. There are enough people coming into DFW from out of town I thought it would be better to move it now as opposed to making the change at the last minute. We have rain in the forecast for the next 7 days unfortunately.

In addition, I have moved the venue to another location with a longer run and a very clean, bump-free, and pristine runway. I look forward to meeting everyone in person and hope you can continue to make the new date/location.

    Regards,

    Darren

Got a call from dryhole Mark about this event happening, as we spoke, at the Caddo Mills Airfield. Nice 35 mile shot east on 30, and probably about 25 nice cars assembled. A few notables are a Carrera GT, Jimmy V's Ford GT, Wayne in RUF's RT12 Orange beast, a RUF conversion, and lots of hot BMW and Benz iron.

The setup ended up being safe in my opinion. You went to the north end of the runway, and they had 3 lanes coned out start to finish. You ran in the outer lanes. You were started by hand signals, and then you got up to approx 30mph where there was a cone grouping. You paced yourself with the other car, and nailed it at the cones. There were two warning cone lines for braking, and there was plenty of run off. You were supposed to do the first of 2 runs as an orientation run (most didn't do) and then go full out on the second run.

When I got there the first run was the TT Diablo of death vs the American Pie Ford GT of JimmyV. Diablo by 2 lengths first run. Then Jimmy spanked the tractor on the next two (one extra). Jimmy pulled a little red light on the first win, but other than a cranky 2nd gear shift in the Lambo, was pretty even. The Diablo was definately getting it's wind at the end. The fastest speed of the day was a twin turbo Viper that hit 160. THe Carrera GT just edged out the RT12 before I got there. On my first run against a SLK55, I got a little surprised by the acceleration at the tops of 2nd and 3rd gears and let off about 125. . Amazing push in the back, and much like the Diablo, starts giving you tunnel vision at the top of 3rd. Things are happening in a hurry, but in a rock steady car capable of this kind of thing. The second run got me to 140, and again had plenty of room to stop.

On top of it all, this was a free event, with only a small donation requested. They hope to make it a regular event, and I give it my thumbs up. Sorry no camera today, so no pics from me. Thanks Darren and others who put it on.

I went out as well, it was a lot of fun and all of the people out there were really nice. I ended up running the viper, on the first run I got about a 4 second jump before he got in it and he passed me like I was testing the abs. He had to abort the 2nd run b/c of traction issues.

I also made a pass against globalm3's 997 turbo cab, he had me by 1 or 2 car lengths.

Anywho, it was fun and seemed like it was set up to be pretty safe.

Thanks for the link. Some great photos! Wonder what the average hp per car was? Not a slacker in the group. Had dryhole in front and Jimmy behind for the drive home up to 635. Surround sound!

hahaha, it's hard to judge b/c we were spread so far apart, definately safer that way. One the 2nd run it seemed like 2 car lengths at the most were what seperated us. I don't know, at 130mph i was looking ahead mostly

Unfortunately my car looks a lot faster than it really is.
