...and more and more people i talk to are not going to FoH to get service done

 

... and .... higher overhead = higher cost. There are trade-off's - but I can not see the value when you are talking oil svc to oil svc.

As long as you trust that the person you have working on the car is offering you what you are looking for, then you are the one who puts the value vs cost in perspective.

I get alot of business from people who simply cost shop the dealership. Saving a couple hundred ends up costing a thousand, because a simple transmission leak was over looked ( may have been caught at the dealership ) and now a tranmission is needed.
I have alot of examples both ways -

In all fairness, I have most svc's done where I work and leave the warranty work and inspections to the dealership - but I have the unfair advantage of working at a dealership - so labor and OEM parts are somewhat less expensive for me.

um.... are we talking about the simple act of..... loosten/remove drain bolt, drain oil, remove filter, replace filter, replace/tighten bolt, insert new oil?

I could see taking a car in for mods/repairs, but for an oil change? Is there something I am missing here?

 

Oil change for my 328 at Norwoods is usually about $150......oil must cost more in Houston.

(and I just realized it's been a while since I've had one.....)

 

348 has a dry sump system.. lots more oil needed apparently.. i dont know if the 328 has a dry sump, thats my guess

 

A three $300 oil change should include a full inspection too. Hoses, belts, fuel lines, brake lines, shocks, and more. If not, it's just crazy. Makes doing it yourself all that more gratifying.

 

The reason is that OPEC has cut production and China is taking most of the oil.

I have done my own oil changes on my 328, but lately I just take it to Norwoods. Quick service, I don't have to crawl around on the concrete and deal with getting rid of the waste oil, I get a professional look-over of the car, and a reason to visit the shop and poke around.

 

except that both shops are getting the same oil... one is just charging more than the other...

yea, I hear ya.... I agree it does get old and messy. Just that some of the prices that were quoted for an oil change were making me giggle. I know from building/working on hot rods many years, it is nice to just take the car and pay someone to do it. But at the same time, we weren't talking about taking an Enzo in for service, thats why I thought it was a little odd.

 

It's expensive for sure. I had some painful repairs done on my 355 there recently, and while my eyes nearly popped out of my head when I saw the invoice, I'm thankful for the relationship I have with them. And they stand behind their work.

 

Got my oil changed from DriverSource yesterday afternoon. They were very nice, talked to me about the car a little... very courteous, great lounge. I HIGHLY recommend them!

 

We changed the oil in our 512TR/M: oil filter and crush washers $30.00 , 3 gallons Shell synthetic oil $75.00. Labor to jack up car, change out lower stuff and add oil and get car off jacks about 1.5 hours. We never had done one before and no problems.

 

I'm the sales manager at Driver Source, and had seen this thread before you took it in. Saw you while you were in, saw you leaving, but didn't get to meet you, was busy with a client. Thanks for the recommendation!

It's about how you value your time.

I had brakes, tranny juice, and oil changed for about $500 last week. Perfectly reasonable price for the labor and mess involved.

Could I do it myself? Yes... and have done it plenty. But honestly, laying on the garage floor in the heat of the summer getting filthy dirty and then carrying the oil to a recycle station simply isn't worth the hassle. IMVHO

 

I just posted this under another topic but forgot to mention 1 thing. My friend just told me that his friend who works at the F dealer told him that an oil change for a 430 is now 1700 bucks. e also said his buddy was just laid off because they have no work. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder why.

 

You have to at least TRY to do your own oil change for criminy sakes.
Driving a Ferrari requires some minimal "car guy" responsibilities.
If not you fall into the poseur category.
