I put Hyperflows and Capristo 2 exhaust on my 355 yesterday. Everything fit beautifully, except that I had a sensor left over from the OEM exhaust that had no opening in the Cappy. I've included pics below. Anyone else have this problem/solution? By the way, no CEL or Slow down lights have come on so I'm not sure if it really needs to be installed. I just hate having it dangle back there. Thanks.

Which parts? Do you want the parts I took out (which all look great by the way) or the parts I put in?

This thermocouple is installed on US cars (not on Euro cars) to verify the correct operation of the exhaust valve. When the valve is opened by the engine ECU, this sensor allows the ECU to check that the valve is effectively open, looking at the temperature of exhaust gas downward the valve.
Not having it connected will probably lead to a CEL (on US cars) in the future. May be the ECU is only able to detect the sensor is missing if the valve is open for a duration long enough to allow for temperature increase above the threshold.
Anyway you can drive the car within this thermocouple, there is no particular risk (except the CEL!). I wont say the same if it was a cat thermocouple.

I have the same situation...... I thought it would cause a CEL but it has not.

The only time the bypass gave me a CEL was when I wired it open with the stock muffler. The codes were cat and O2 sensor related as well as the famous P1448 bypass valve code. In the past (pre cappy) I had a bad vacuum line to the valve and it was not opening, I never got a code from it not opening. Of course I fixed the hose and all has been well since :).

Therefore it is my opinion that the thermocouple is there only to make sure the valve does not stay open thereby compromising proper post cat o2 sensor operation. This would only be true on the 5.2 355s as they are the only ones with post cat o2 sensors.

So in sumation, zip tie the thermocouple somewhere safe and enjoy your new capristo!!!!!!! ............. :D :D :D :D

With what ?? I have the same capristo.... I have the thermocouple laying on the heat shield and have not gotten a CEL. I know mine is just one example. Believe me my CEL works...:p ....... the vescovinis work, as I have bounced them from left to right. They work in every position.

Any one with a stock 5.2 355 can validate my statements with a simple test:

    1. Wire the valve open and read the codes that come up.

    2. Clear the codes

    3. Then unplug the bypass valve vacuum line so the bypass valve does not open. Then wait for a code........

    Who wants to try this???

I would guess its the 'zip tie' comment ;)

Thanks Goth. That's what I wanted to hear. I can't tell you how unbelievably awesome the sound is...but I guess you already know!!!!!!!

Interestingly enough, I called Germany this morning and spoke to the Capristo folks. The actually recommend the same thing. They don't think the CEL should come on because this thermocoupler is not placed. They also said that it's very rare for the 355 exhausts to actually have a muffler thermocoupler after the valve....that the 355s that have it are very "raw"--whatever that means!?!?! Their suggestion was to just tie it somewhere back in the engine. Alternatively, I'd have to drill a hole in my shiny new muffler and weld in a screw that accepts the thermocoupler....more than I care to do honestly.

To give an update on this previous thread about the exhaust valve thermocoupler question, I have been driving the car now for a month and approximately 300 miles. I ziptied the extra thermocoupler to the back of the car. No problems to report and no CEL. The car continues to run great and sound even better. Hope this helps someone else in the future.

Cool!! My F355 has behaved exactly the same way ;)..... that is how I deduced the "bypass" thermocouple was there to monitor only a 'stuck open' scenario, since this would affect proper primary-cat functionality and emmissions the most..... :)!!

So IMO the capristo sound has no rival on a 355...................... :D!!!!
