Hi, I wanted to check and see if anyone has or knows of a top quality Dino 246 gts for sale? I may have an interested associate. I would need to see pics, get details on car, price and anything else that I can pass on to him. He wants a really nice quality car. I can't promise a sale but I will forward all info to him and then if there is interest i will put both parties in touch.
    Thanks!

That could take years to find a 100 point car for sale. Since I assume he's a man of means, he may need to find the best 246 he can and do the restoration to concourse himself.

Where do you feel the price range for such a car would be?
Serious question, real car, factory flares and chairs

Best place to start is to learn how to spell 'concours' and 'quality'. ;)

One person to contact would be FChat'er Omgjon, who's restoring his second 246, IIRC. I saw the first one completed, and the second before he started. Amazing work.

I once met a very nice Asian man who could not read or write but he spoke several languages and could have paid for the whole Ferrari factory with spare change from down the back of his couch. And to lotustt i would ask your friend what he wants to do with the car before you start seriously chasing anything theres a big difference between a 100 point show car and one you want to drive and i dont just mean the price you could save yourself a lot of time and trouble.

I bought a really excellent 12,000 mile car (1974 GTS w/ chairs and flares) in May. Completely original, everything works except the clock. It has never been painted, (and needs it for a perfectionist, but is fine for someone who wants a great car he can drive without feeling every ping.) The asking price was $200k firm, and I paid it, because I'd seen 3 or 4 25-45k mile cars that had been painted and were not completely original, and they were all in the $175k-195k range. I bid down 5-10% on a couple and was refused.

Since then, I have seen very good cars sell for $175-200k. There have been a couple for sale on this site.

My experience of paying a premium for a really, really sound car mechanically has been 100% positive so far. The car is a dream to drive, and I don't fret about a couple of pebble chips or whatnot, because the paint is so far from perfect, who cares? Having said that, I am still considering having it repainted this winter, and getting rid of the nicks so I can start over on them! That seems to be a $15-30k pricetag, depending on where you get it done geographically, with New York and LA being at the high end.

I would say that if you can afford it, the strategy of buying the best car you can find is right. I also do not agree that it's not worth paying up for a really low-miles car. My suspension feels like new, and short of an insane resto like omgjohn's I have never been in any restored 60s-70s car of any kind that get that tight, crisp feeling back.

So, I would say anything from $180-230k for a really great car is the price range. Unless your friend wants to eat, drink and sleep Dinos like a lot of F-Chatters, I think getting one that needs a lot more work is going to be a frustrating pain in the butt.

I wouldn't sell my car for pretty much any price unless I had a ready replacement lined up and could pocket a lot of cash to cover any downside. In fact, I can't imagine anyone healthy enough to drive it selling a really great Dino unless they really needed the money!

My thought is that given how prices have moved over the last 2 years, a 100pt concours GTS would be around $225k to $240k, and maybe more.

I believe that GTS chairs and flares Dinos in excellent cosmetic condition, without material mechanical issues, should fetch around $250k. It sounds really stupid, but the fact is that there are simply hardly any Dinos fitting that description that are for sale anywhere. I know that I would seriously consider a $250K offer but certainly nothing less.

Dinos have attained cult status for good reason - they are great to drive, can be shown at concours in the vintage section, are the historical start of the mid engine genetic tree, and have linkage to racing history.

Many of the nice Dinos have been tightly held by owners or have been impounded in collections so they won't surface for years. Those Dinos that were needing love have found willing owners to sink thousands into restorations thereby reducing the pool in the low end and sweeping the bottom end of the market upward.

For example, is there any other group of Ferrari owners that regularly seek out the peripheral parts/books/pouch/manuals/deliverie items and tiny details of their car more? Despite the fact that a scant 1200+ Dino 246 GTS cars were produced.

Great info and replies guys, thanks! Everyone makes valid points, I am going to see what he really wants to spend. He currently has a 2800 mile 89 328 gts and a 3500 mile 99 355 spider as well.

it is monday, and i just arrived back at my hotel room from the factory. there is a dino on display in the museum and one in front of auto toni. other than that, there is nothing dino to be seen at the factory store or the other little stores around, other than a book (nye).

one of the people on the factory tour mentioned one that he knew for sale in new jersey that he really wanted to buy. the asking price is $240k. he didn't say where it was, but mentioned classic coach works in the same train of thought, so i am not sure who or where he is thinking this number is right.

Prices sure have gone up for these cars over the last couple of years. Fontana yours does look nice though in that color. Is it snowing up there already? ;)

ps the rear bumper looks to be pointing downward and not straight, any particular reason?

My GTS took platinum at Concorso in 2004, scoring 95 points. That year there were about 42 (?) others there as the Dino was the featured car so the score was relatively impressive. That being said, I have still had to spend quite a bit on it as there is no such thing as a 'perfect' car, even if it has won concours. As most of you know, 'concours' quality really means the superficial aspects of the car are in order, but speaks nothing of the mechanical nature of the beast. It could very well mean a stunning paintjob with disastrous synchros.

Mike Sheehan wrote an article in SCM about 4 months ago regarding how much it would cost to built a 100 point Dino - the answer was over US$300K. Those last few points are about US$100K.....obviously more than the value of the most perfect Dino.

I know of several Dinos that have sold lately for over US$200K. I know this sounds high, but if you do the math that is the approximate cost of buying an 'okay' car and trying to make it show quality, assuming you are not doing the work yourself.

I was just thinking that not too long ago, you'd see 246's with Ferrari badges all over them. I never had a problem with that even though it wasn't correct; but with the prices the way they are today, I would now demand Dino badges only!

Fontana / Steve - I'm not one to quibble but surely a true 100 point Dino would never have seen the snow let alone been driven in it !!!

this is the dino that was auctioned here in houston in may. the final price (hammer + comission) was $198k. they have removed the fender shields and listed again for sale. it is a very nice car, but i wouldn't describe it as the best in the world. frankly, i was expecting a REALLY nice dino based on it's awards. when i saw it, i was very surprised
