HOLY COW (haha). Melodie was in the mood for BBQ'd New York's for dinner tonight. Went to the store (Safeway) after my garage sale this morning and just about croaked (I do not do the shopping in the house). Three decent sized Angus New Yorks were about $26! What is going on with beef pricing? Shaking my head, I sucked it up and bought the three-pack. These better be good!

Is it just California or does the rest of the US sport beef pricing like this? What do you pay for a good store-bought steak?

Just wait for them to go on sale. You'd be surprised what you can save with a little planning ahead and checking out the circulars.

Low rainfall = low grazing land = smaller herds, as Cattlemen do not overproduce, and in turn, oversupply in such conditions.

Coupled with higher transport costs, this raises prices on their own accord.

Demand, however, remains on par with a cornucopia of cows, which adds to your misery.

    Bottom line: Seller's market.

I know 'prime' beef has gone up 65% in the last three years. P.S. A ribeye is a really cheap cut of meat that has a lot of fat on it, so it tastes great. Great money maker for ruth's chris.

Beef is through the roof! It's usually $8-10 a lb around here. Too f'n expensive for me. It's not worth it. Sometimes "Frys" has NY Strips (my fav steaks) on sale for $4 a lb, then I'll buy a steak or 2. Other than that, it's all ground beep (which is really f'n expensive now too) or chicken :)

I have 'Herd' that (haha). Gotta do some more Google homework, but it makes sense. If true, the Ethenol manufacturers are way outbidding the grain / feed manufacturers for the corn.

I haven't had one in a while. A few days ago, I went to lunch with a couple of fellow soldiers. A little old lady stopped by and thanked us for serving our country. After she left, the waiter came by and said she paid for our lunch. Best. Steak. Ever.

Beef goes up and down throughout the year. I have no idea what it's based on, I just know I complain to my wife at the grocery store for a few months every year about how expensive it is.

I hope you bought the Ranchers Reserve, the other meat really sucks. Next time try a health food store. Go for the organic certified beef. The taste difference is mind blowing.

Have noticed beef getting a bit up in price, but have always liked lamb/mutton better anyway.

Scarfed these morsels down earlier and they only ran me around $2...

Would you please give him a call and post his reply? My guess is that he may be getting pounded by the price of grain. I'd be interested to get it first-hand (or ranch-hand.....haha). Sorry, that was utterly stupid :D

Afew years ago, I visited a buddy that manages an Angus ranch in N.CA. I played cowboy for three days. Feeding time was pretty interesting. At 5AM, we went out to the grain barn. We mixed up four different types of feed from huge bins. There was ground corn, barley and a couple kind of hops of some sort. I swear it looked good enough to pour milk on and eat it! (Just had an idea for another thread).
