I just got back from vacation. I had left my car at the guys from competizione in MD to do the 30K since it needed it. They always perform leakdowns with the engine out and found some pretty bad numbers:

    Compression Tests:
    1-225psi #5-220psi
    2-225psi #6-225psi
    3-205psi #7-195psi
    4-225psi #8-225psi

    leak down tests:
    #1-10% #5-17%
    #2-12% #6-20%
    #3-30% #7-46%
    #4-14% #8-8%

So I they pulled the heads off and will fix things, it seems to be an exhaust valve issue on #7. Good news is that they are doing it 100% professionally and have sent the heads to a machine shop to redo the valve guides and refinish the heads. They think I should notice the car pull quite a bit harder when it is done. Bad news is it will cost me probably 3K extra than I thought, maybe more. All in all though, I still got the car for a great price and it makes me happy to get it back to perfect running order.

I've attached some as well to show the valves and heads off.

Consider yourself fortunate if it only costs an additional $3K. I know that is a lot of money but seems very reasonable to me.

I think that is the low end, we'll see when they are done. I knew going into this is wasn't going to be cheap as a hobby, so it's not a huge deal...but still, would have rather bought new wheels or a vespa to go around DC or something :)

That is bad news, but it's a Ferrari.
We all know Italian cars are colorful. The law of physics state that if something can go wrong, it probably will.

A mate just rebuilt his engine (he drives a v6 camry) and it cost him 5k to get it fixed because everything was broken.
I think 5 grand is alot, so 3k to do that on a Ferrari seems not too bad:)
On the plus side at least it will run really well when you get it back

Based on the appearance in the cyls, I'd say this car was probably driven like a little old lady by the previous owner, and not very often. Lots of carbon! Ya gotta give 'em some revs occasionally to keep the insides happy-kinda like raisin bran for the motor!

    Eric,

I was out at Competizione on Saturday and Fernando was working on your car. I'm sure they'll do an excellent job getting it back into top form.

The rest of your car (you know, the part that they throw in when they sell you the engine) also looked really good -- can't wait to see it back on the road.

I wasn't clear on your original post...Are your just repairing the exhaust valves o#7, or are you doing all 8 cylinders? If doing all 8 $3k sounds like a pretty fair deal. If you're repaing just #7, I have to wonder why you're not doing the whole thing given the age of the motor and the fact that it's already all apart.

great question and short answer is I don't know what they are doing exactly since I've been abroad and just exchanging short emails. I gave them the go ahead to fix it and I believe they are fixing everything (all 8) and like I said, the 3K is just a ball park. Anyhow I have to call them this week and I will get all the details and let you know what happened.

Was she burning oil prior to this service? That's a *lot* of carbon.

Please ask your service guys to photo (or give to you) your spark plugs to post here.

Will be nice to have her put back together knowing that she's been done right, though!

I drove the car about 1000 miles since I got it in may and it used no oil during that time. I'll see about the spark plugs....

Agreed, likely contributor to the bad (and inconsistent) leakdown readings.

    Those fellows are very good!

OK Some more updates. I spent a long time with richard, what a great guy!!

2 issues were found with my car above regular 30K stuff. The exhaust valve guides were toast on #7 and #3 and getting to be toast on the rest. They are fitting new valve guides all around that are not brass, but some allow (magnesium something if remember) that he says they use for race engine builds. Interesting thing is that he says he's seen more and more 348s with this problem and has done 4 this year.

Secondly, the bearing that holds the belt pulley was all wobbly and was about to go. I got really lucky on this issue. That bearing needs to be changed plus new tensioners need to be fitted (recall item that apparently was not done on my car). This will be ~1600 in parts alone. Ouch!

Here is the pic of the cleaned pistons and the bearing that failed in question.

Finally some random pics of all the parts that need to go back together again, of my shiny new valve covers, of the new painted bumper and the front without the bumper. Also richard had the very good argument that after so much work has been done, it would be a shame if the old cats clogged and he'd feel better with hyperflows on, so those will be going on too!!! I can't wait to get it back

Your plugs show oil on the threads, so you were burning a little oil and that most certainly contributed (perhaps even explains) the way your heads et al looked.

Anyway, you seem to have a quality man doing your work, so I suspect that you are going to be quite pleased with the finished product. A tuned 348 is a thing of great beauty!

(Oh, please ask your guy if the Ferrari factory cam timing marks are dead on...FBB will be especially interested in that datapoint)
