Fairly true, but previous maintenance history holds the real truth.

+1. Also, the history of the car, how it was used is important. If the car was abused, or if it was left sitting for years and years without being cranked over, it could effect the bearings. But as a general proposition, they are pretty solid.

I have even been told that quite often hone marks in the cylinder bores are still very present when tearing down. Pretty robusto

Remember that the 288 GTO, 348, 355, and the F-40 share the same virtual block and crank. The bottom is tough, but certainly not indistructable. I seen a whole pile of them with holes in them once.

My own personal opinion, based on working on many varying breeds of cars over the years, is the 308 is made of the same or better materials as Mercedes or any other top line engine. The liners are standard high grade cast steel, and should wear and last as long as any Mercedes. The crankshaft and rods are about as tough of steel as you can buy anywhere, and should outlast just about anything. Lack of maintainance, abuse, neglect, and disconnected speedometers that make everyone "think" they are all low mileage cars with a ton of mechanical trouble, have done more to sully these cars reputation than anything imaginable.
