2 identical 288 GTO's : 500k for 21k kilos, 600k for 6k kilos. The 6k car is perfect, , 21k car as nice as can be expected with that mileage. Is it worth an extra 100k? I drive my cars maybe 2k a year. some track days, some rallies.

 

Id try and get the 21k car for $450k . 6k is still low mileage so you might get the guilty feeling of adding miles to a low miles cars ..

I'd say it depends on recent mileage - I bought mine with 11K km, but it had done 3K of those in the last 2 years and been looked after by a mechanic I know well. You can easily drop 25K just getting a 288 ready to drive with hoses etc. Getting someone who knows the cars to look at both is a good idea.

Yup, those two gauges are what every GTO, and F40, should have. Anyone with a Turboprop will probably recognize them. They are EGT (exhaust gas temperature) gauges. The exhaust gas temperature in a car rises and fails very quickly. So, if something goes wrong, like one bank (I have one per bank) is beginning to run lean, you'll notice it in 30 seconds or less. By the time the water temperature and/or oil temperature has told you anything, you've cooked the motor. Usually people don't notice them because it looks almost factory they way I had it installed where the ash tray was. And, to put it back to stock, I just lift these out and put the ashtray back in.

Also, after conversations with the factory, they told me the optimum exhaust gas temperature where the GTO puts out maximum horsepower is between 1200 and 1300 degrees. They felt the engine could handle up to 1400 degrees before self destruction. Personally, if I'm on the track and I saw the EGT get to 1300, I'm stopping. At the track, at full song, for multiple laps, my car reads 1225 to 1250.

If you're tooling around town, it's between 900 and 1000.

Great thread with a wealth of info here - here's some pics from the 60th in Maranello. I couldn't tell whether the suspension had been modified on this Swiss example. It looked like it is used a lot and the autographs (including Schumacher's) are an interesting touch.

I have just read that FML concludes that in addition to the 272 known GTO we have on the factory register, 13 additional chassis numbers are confirmed as GTOs....

I only show a total of 279 cars (272 production and 7 pre-production) on my register.

Yup. Makes me proud being Canadian knowing that Mr. Rob Myers (RM) is doing so well internationally. He is definetly making a name in Vintage Ferrari sales if not the best. Not bad for a guy who started here in Ontario with a small resto shop

On a side note: If the 288 GTO came out in 84 then why is the Prototipo an 85?

 

Auction catalogs are unfortunately replete with mistakes, sometimes not the fault of the auction company as they rely on information supplied by vendors or sellers. They have a disclaimer in the catalog covering this very issue.
