How difficult is is to replace the generator or is it alternator on a 79 308. my light goes on when i am driving slow, as i increase speed the light goes out (sometimes). is there a separate regulator or is it one unit, is the concenses to replace both .can the typical rebuilder do this and are parts for rebuilding readily available.
    Thanks

The regulator is internal, if you're going to remove it have the it rebuild and put new regulator.
If your old regulator is still good, keep it for spare. It's a little bit of work but you can do it.

For a 1st timer it will take maybe 4 hrs to remove the alt. in a 308. I believe there are some instructions in the search area but you would need to start by removing the passenger (right) side wheel and then the fender inner liner. Once you do that you will see the alt. in the lower right corner of the engine. Take a look and you will figure out how to do it. Not a bad task and it gives you a chance to mix some of your blood with the Ferrari oil. Enjoy the ride.

Are you sure your belt is tight enough? Maybe there is nothing wrong with it? Just my 2 cents.

good point, but it looks like i have to take the wheel, housing, etc. to check for belt tension, is that correct?

What's the longest amount of time the light stays on? Does the battery go dead from this?

Yes, dropping the RH inner fender will be Step one of many things in your ownership as a DIYer......atually your operation is normal for nighttime where the lights absorb much of the output..

I agree check belt tension and order a new belt to be ready if you don't have the Tool Kit set on hand..

Once removed any reputable shop will know what they are looking at, if not where it came from if you catch my drift...

"It fits an old FIAT" will save you a lot of money as life goes on.......LOL!

Do you have the Owner's Manual to show the measure point?

There's a bunch of mumbo jumbo concerning Tension Meters and such, but truthfully it's a 'just tight enough not to slip" type of deal as preloading the bearings is bad for the alternator itself..

Also (since we're here) the poly belts will not show wear in a traditional sense, if it has gotten loose, and squealed or slipped, it is glazed and should be renewed or in desperation sanded rough again! The same goes for the pulleys, belt dressing for rubber belts has a little effect, but emory cloth is better!

dont know if the battery goes dead...i dont want to be in that position..( haha stuck ferrari in parking lot), very recent affliction, seems to go out in a few miles, drove the car last night with lights on and the red generator beacon on the dash just sucks, is brighter than the instrument lights. it did not go out with the lights on. in the past I drove at night and no light so there is definatly something wrong

i do get some belt slipping sounds when i first start the car..goes away as soon as i drive a mile or so, i put some belt dressing on and that seemed to have solved the problem...or not

Your tension is bad then...tighten it up and deglaze ASAP!

Your belts glaze after only a few squeals........

Read my note on the dressing, our belts are a different polymer compound entirely from US rubber belts, much closer to plastic, IMO.......

Sounds like you need re-adjust the belt. You shouldn't have any slipping noises.

i am going to try to deal with this over the weekend, is the belt a pep boys, autozone item. Perhaps the belt may solve my genererator issue.
I also want to change the oil this weekend, which drain plug is the oil vs transmission the one most to the rear ?
    Thanks for all the feedback.
