MSRP would be what the car would have been worth in 1990 and not be of much value in determining what the car may be worth today. Are you sure they want MSRP?

I just re-insured my 1976 Vespa after having it dormant for a few years and USAA wanted to know the price new in 1976. OK, aside from the fact that I am far from the original owner, I was 7 in 1976. I wasn't buying anything more expensive than bubblegum. What in the world does this have to do with insuring the vehcle today? I told her a Model T was $395 new. Does have anything at all do with what it cost to repair or replace it today? I don't know what this info is for other than maybe using it for statistical analysis of vehicle depreciation.

When I bought the GT4 almost a year ago they asked what I paid for it. Now that seems more relevant. But still, I got a pretty good deal (I think), and GT4 prices seem to be creeping up, so if it gets totalled they better not just write a check for my purchase price. So even that knowledge seems pretty worthless.

I'm not sure what they're up to, but I'm sure it's not for my advantage.

I ran into this same problem with my insurance company, AAA, for my recently purchased 1989 Mondial t cab. They valued the car for insurance purposes at something like 75% of the original purchase price in 1989 which was approx. $100,000+. I have no idea what the rationale is for that assesment. When I get motivated I will look at other insurance options.

Forget that, just push it in a lake, go buy another '89 t cab, and but a 308 with the difference!;)

Jokes aside, State Farm wrote me an "agreed value" policy for my 328, and if they asked me what I paid (which I'm not sure they did) they certainly didn't ask for any proof. My policy is quite reasonable.

Same for me. 328, State Farm, very reasonable. However, they did tell me that if at any time I wanted to change my coverage to have it considered a collector or show car instead of just an occasional use second vehicle, I could increase the insured value with a professional appraisal on file.

thanks for the posts, I couldnt agree more. but unfortunatley this country is run by backward thinking and unpragmatic beancounters. I could go on a nice rant with this one. I will just play the game for now and yes i will call state farm to compare. I just need some Insurance, Leland West would not insure me because i wanted to drive my car to work for one day a week into the heart of oakland county which is one of the wealthiest areas in the country. enough said thanks again for all your help

You want to insure your car for "agreed value," not "actual cash value." ACV= Cost New-Depreciation. That is why the insurance company wants to know what it cost new. Yeah, I agree it's stupid. Yes, it's a clerk filling out a form. What they will really do in a claim situation is look at NADA values, check publications, etc. if it is totaled. Bad process for a rare car. That's why you want to go for agreed value. Another reason is when you buy that nice 599 listed on F-Ads for $460K. What's MSRP on that? $300K or so? How would you like to drive that baby around the block, total it and collect on an ACV basis? With agreed value there are no arguments. It costs more, but you get what you pay for.
