About 8-9 years back I was having trouble finding air filters for the twin air boxes..so I improvised..remove the square filters and put them in your boxfull of other F-arts parts...Now buy two cylindrical K&N filters with a mouth the size to fit the i.d. of the air induction ducting..you can have them placed behind the grill or do as I've done..and shorten them so that cold air is fed directly from the hood louvers..bingo... 15hp gain on each bank..now you have european hp and performance for $70.00total..Now, I know that there will be the usual chior about "originality"..but I just don't give an "RF"..Every Ferrari mechanic that has seen or worked on my 1980 400i likes it..oh, and by the way..15mph in town ain't to shabby with NGKBP7ES's is a wonderful combo too..But, if you must stay "stock", the stock UFI #30.830.00 or Ferrari#00113-28300-000 or just#113283 .....it also fits the Lambo Countach...I know these are correct because I am holding them in my hands...Hope some of this helps..Jacques.

    FYI...K&N #33-2570 fits airbox of 400i's
True cold air intakes are generally sourced from behind the front grille, which Ferrari's set-up is, difference is K&N locates their filter cone in the front grille area. The purpose for the hood louvers is to extract heat given off by the radiator (obviously more efficient when moving), don't be fooled into thinking this is an intake source. Take note of the earlier 512 Boxers with motors amidship and radiator behind front grille and hood louvers introduced specifically to extract heat.

A 30HP gain with filters, dont bet on it. Strap it on the rollers and show us the gain otherwise assume you gained about 8HP total at 6500RPM which might translate into about 0.5HP at 2000rpm. Nothing is that simple unless you found a dead racoon stuck in your air box.

How do you benchmark this? Dyno? It would be cool doing something like this on the 400!

Why do you think that a euro spec 400I is more HP than a US car? Aren't all 400I euro cars with evap emmisions, door beams and 5mph bumpers?
Does spinning an air pump really take away 15HP?

I agree with Steve on this.

Also, an engine is usually an optimized device, you can't just throw something on and claim great gains. If you are getting higher manifold pressure, you would generally need to adjust cam and ignition timing to take propper advantage of it.

    Regards,

I didn't know these things had air pumps, mine doesn't, nor the round 'can' mounted on pass. side air filter box. 400s never officially imported to Ferrari dealers in US, I always thought that they found their way over here via interested buyers purchasing them from european owners and shipping them over---and of course, then, satisfying DOT & EPA requirements (which seems to vary from car to car maybe because of the port they came in, dunno).
