I brought up an idea to clean up the forum by charging for every membership, something to the tune of $5-15 a year, instead of allowing free memberships. There would only be 2 tiers, Silver and Rossa, no unsubscribed. Would you pay to access Fchat (if you don't already)?

    Bad idea.

    1) People who haven't been here before wouldn't know how the forum is like. Who would buy a product they if they didn't know what they were getting?
    2) Think about all the contributions from non-subscribers - I see a lot of those posts!

This has been floated a couple of times. But I agree, even a $1 charge would help weed out the kids and probably 99.9% of the spam!

But I also think you could grandfather in all those that are member's now. We can deal with them as the trools show themselves.

I would be happy to pay something as i find the site very interesting (even though i dont have an f-car but am working on it), i still have not got round to subsribing as i have only just changed my user name but will be doing so this week.

I like the idea but also agree you might put off some members by not allowing anyone the opportunity to see the boards before they pay to join. Maybe a suggestion would be to allow anyone to see the 'general chat' board only, and the other boards solely for subscribers. That way they can try before they buy and get an idea of what the site is like.

I would not ban non-members from seeing the board, just from posting on it!

At the prices mentioned I'd happily pay, as long as I could access the areas that I can't as an 'Unsubscribed' member. I agree that it would get rid of a lot of spam and kids but on the other hand there is a risk that people with the potential to make valid contributions would never join as they wouldn't be able to 'road test' the site first. I don't know if it's possible to allow a 30 day trial with payment required to maintain one's account after that point, but if so that might be the way around the problem.

30-60 day trial period upon registration which includes viewing and posting, followed by viewing only for non-payers and ofcourse the whole package for the payers.

yes, but the original intention was to keep trolls from posting here.

with the above solution you'd still have those wank*** coming here and stirring trouble

I've paid in the past, saw no benefit other than an avatar, but would pay twice as much in the future for the facility to filter out the inheritocrats, the Baggadonuts crew, and the Hooters cruisers.

As a student that is currently full time without a job I value every cent I can keep. So being a cheepskate it would upset me if this site became a pay to play site. I have because of this site met a few interesting people that i would not have otherwise. I hope that the unsubscribe membership stays until I am able to find a well paying job and can afford such nice things as you know a rosso membership or a ferrari.

Thanx 4 putting up with me

    Nope,

Not in favor of it at all. I think the more the merrier here!

And I do pay for my membership. I'm not getting a free ride because I'm a sponsor or a mod.

I happen to think the site is worth the money, but I'd equate it to National Public Radio.

I can listen for free on NPR, or be a subscribed member. The service to me is the same either way, but I can support it with a membership fee if I want. I bought a membership here because I felt the content of the site was worth it, not so that I could wander into the subscribed sections and post extra double secret stuff.

The extra double secret stuff just turned out to be an added bonus. :D
