I read in R&T that the 430S tranny will shift in 60 ms. Is this confirmed? The 599 is 100 ms and an F1 car is about 50 ms, right? That's going to be pretty sick if true. I can't imagine that on a street car.

The FXX is about 80 and the 1999 Ferrari F1 car was about 60. However the newest F1 cars I believe are closer to 20 (Seamless Shift).

    20? HOLY 5HIT!

I wonder if these reduced shifting speeds will have the added benefit of longer clutch life in addition to the awesome acceleration ?

    Good Lord .... i'm actually agreeing w/u!

It matters for marketing purposes but for the car's stated purposes (ie; Luca's commentary @launch) it's a distinction w/o a difference. Or visa versa. <LOL>

    Peace,

    Richard.

Honda makes a transmission that shifts in 0 ms. It's called a CVT :)

Sorry, but the CVT does not 'shift', such is the name. constant variable transmision.

Vandoorn was Dutch inventor back in the 60's.

Take 4 discs that are tappered, two on one shaft, to on another shaft, face the tapered portion toward each other
use a metal belt to connect them, move the plates towards or away from eachother, causes the belt to go up or down the plates
    creating variable ratios without shifting.

Can anyone supply any documentation of this? The M6 that I drove felt like it took 6 seconds to shift. I am exaggerating a bit but I just wasn't very impressed with its speed or smoothness in any mode.

I've got one - it sure doesn't feel like 65ms. In 90% of driving, the SMG's shift is slow and clunky.

Anyway, for fast shifts, the VW Golf GTI DSG shifts in 8 ms.

BMW and Ferrari are measuring different things. BMW is giving you the time simply for one cog to swap. Ferrari is giving you the time for the clutch in, cog swap, clutch out. I have driven both and there is NO comparison- the 430 F1 is noticeably faster than SMG and at 150ms one would think it would be noticeably slower. Its not. I wouldnt be surprised if the M SMG system is more like 175-200ms for the whole process.

    best regards,
    Jerry

Try it in S6 full throttle at 8000 rpm. Shift times blow away the CS.

The 99 360 F1 shifts faster than an FXX?! Hard to believe. What am I missing here?

For those of you discussing BMW SMG, the way BMW measures shift time is very different from Ferrari. They measure the disengagement time to engagement time. This is a much smaller number than the time you hit the paddle till the time you are accelerating in the next gear. Ferrari measures from the time you stop accelerating in one gear until you start accelerating in the next. To those BMW nuts out there - I had the M6 (and about every other M car), and the SMG just plain sucked, even compared to my 99 360 F1 (track). On the street, the BMW is smoother, but of course Ferrari had fixed this too by 2003.
